Westmoreland Sanctuary was founded in 1957 with the mission to acquire, enrich and preserve land for the free use, enjoyment, and education of the public.

Organization  

Westmoreland Sanctuary is an independent non-profit with a staff of three full-time and one part-time professional. This position will represent the fourth employee in the organization. We reach between 6,000-8,000 individuals through diverse environmental educational programming through schools, scouts, birthday parties, camps, and adults. We maintain 7.5 miles of hiking trails and 640 acres of land and are open seven days a week to service the public.

Job Description

Full-time: 40 hours/week, pay is commensurate with experience and includes benefits. There is opportunity to work in a supportive environment that will help acquire a variety of skills. The Westmoreland Sanctuary Team is willing to work with an individual and help them grow into the position. The candidate should have an appreciation for the natural world and want to advocate for it. The candidate should also be flexible and self-guided. 

Salary Range: $35,000-$50,000 

Job Summary 

This is an entry to mid-level position with the ability to advance. The job reports to the Executive Director and the General Manager.  This position will include teaching under supervision initially and then independently. They will also be responsible for official correspondence such as donor thank you letters, grant writing, PowerPoint presentations, and newsletter production. It will also include managing and posting to social media platforms. This job will require hours beyond nine to five.  This person will need to have impeccable writing skills and be detailed oriented. This is an onsite position and remote working is not possible.  

The candidate must be comfortable with teaching all ages and learning new curricula. In addition, be flexible, articulate, motivated, and able to write collaboratively. The applicant must represent the organization in a positive manner to all members of the community. 

Duties: 

Job responsibilities: 

  • Teaching to schools, scouts, birthday parties, internships, and camps for all ages
  • Programs include pond ecology, forest ecology and other New York State Next Generation Science Standard Curricula topics and lessons
  • Use online platforms and social media 
  • Help write and organize fundraising campaigns and events to solicit donations
  • Help write and design promotional materials and increase awareness of an organization’s mission, goals, and financial needs
  • Maintain records of donor information
  • Work with Executive Director and grant writers to research, write and submit grants for the capital campaign and more broadly Westmoreland Sanctuary’s general operating budget
  • Help organize annual & biannual fundraisers 
  • Events may include, hikes, galas, outdoor cocktail parties and dinners

Education, Skills, and Training: 

The candidate with any of the following degrees will be considered B.S., B.A., B.S.E., S.S. ed, M.C.S. and E.Ds.

  • Independent, flexible, and strong interpersonal skills is key
  • Work in a team setting
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, photoshop, social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), and be willing to learn website management (WordPress) 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Good public speaker
  • Be able to pivot
