Job Summary

Woodlands Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is hiring an Environmental Education Apprentice. This apprenticeship is designed for graduates to gain hands-on experience in animal care and environmental education. This is a year-long position. Compensation includes $7.50/hr and free housing provided if needed.

Woodlands Nature Station, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, Kentucky

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver public programs to varied audiences at Nature center for USDA Forest service.
  • Develop curriculum-based school programs to varied groups visiting Nature center.
  • Quality care and husbandry of 55 native rescued wildlife species including Bobcat, Endangered Red Wolves, Birds of Prey, Reptiles, Amphibians.
  • Lead outdoor excursions such as wildlife viewing trips, canoe/kayak trips, nature hikes.
  • Deliver outreach programs to local communities with outreach animals.
  • Assist in maintaining native pollinator gardens.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must possess a 4-year degree in Environmental Education, Wildlife Biology, Recreation, or related fields, and not be currently enrolled in school.
  • Customer Service experience preferred.
  • Previous experience conducting interpretive programming preferred.
  • Previous animal care experience preferred (home pets count!)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to organize and plan in a timely manner.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with Canva, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and other related programs.
  • CPR and First Aid preferred.

Working Conditions

  • 40-hr week, flexible schedule that will include weekends, some evenings and holidays.
  • Long days in humid and hot west Kentucky weather.
