POSITION DESCRIPTION – Environmental Education Facilitator

The Escondido Creek Conservancy is seeking part-time, seasonal Environmental Education Facilitators to support their outdoor and in-classroom environmental education programs during the 2024-2025 school year.

BACKGROUND: Located in the County of San Diego, California, the Escondido Creek Conservancy is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring the Escondido Creek watershed. The Conservancy also supports environmental and outdoor educational and recreational programs within the watershed and in the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve—a 784-acre park featuring 11 miles of trails.

EQUITY AND INCLUSION: The Conservancy understands the value of equity and inclusion and is committed to these principles. Through many programs, we successfully advocate for and facilitate equitable access to nature, environmental education, and empowering outdoor experiences for all.

DUTIES: The Environmental Education Facilitator will work with the Conservancy’s Education Director to support varying Conservancy-run environmental education programs. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in paid program training
  • Assisting with in-classroom (and/or virtual) lessons at schools throughout North San Diego County
  • Leading groups of students on educational field trips, primarily at the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve
  • Coordinating on-site programs
  • Carrying out other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: This is an entry-level role ideal for individuals with at least one year of experience working with youth. Experience with 1st through 5th grade is preferred, though familiarity with middle and high school students is a plus, as some programs serve older age groups. Applicants must be team-oriented and comfortable working in classrooms, outdoor environments, and virtual settings. A positive attitude and patience with children are essential qualities for success in this role. Reliable transportation is required. All selected candidates must pass a criminal background check. First Aid/CPR certification is required and will be provided by the Conservancy if needed.

Preferred but not required qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in education, science, conservation, or a related field
  • Familiarity with national and state education standards (NGSS) and inquiry-based learning
  • Conversational proficiency in Spanish

HOURS: The position involves approximately 0–20 hours of work per week from September 2025 to May 2026. The schedule is variable, but programs generally take place on Monday-Wednesday between 8:00 am–5:30 pm, 1-3 days/week. Opportunities for additional hours outside of the M-W availability will be offered, but are not required, and are contingent upon funding.

PAY: Starting at $23/hr.

BENEFITS: Benefits include one floating holiday, the accrual of sick time at a rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, and eligibility to participate in a 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching. Employees receive mileage reimbursement for work-related travel and phone/computer use reimbursement, which varies depending on the role. Staff also have the option to purchase health, dental, and vision insurance at Conservancy rates, though premiums are employee-paid. Additional benefits include access to professional development opportunities and unpaid bereavement leave.
