At Green River Preserve, a non-profit outdoor education center and summer camp set on a pristine 3,400-acre private wildlife preserve, we are guided by a simple mission: to inspire environmental stewards through a joyful connection to nature. During the fall, our School of Environmental Education (SEE) welcomes school groups for life-changing residential programs. We are looking for passionate, dedicated Mentors to join our tight-knit community. In this role, you will lead inquiry-based trail hikes and serve as a deeply impactful role model and cabin mentor. If you are an outdoor educator who thrives in a collaborative, nature-immersed environment and is eager to foster wonder, curiosity, and conservation in young minds, we would love for you to join us for our Fall SEE Program from September 1st to October 11th, 2026. 

As a staff member at Green River Preserve you hold a position of great responsibility and importance. Your warmth, enthusiasm, willingness to share knowledge, and sensitivity to the needs of each camper contribute profoundly to the success of our program.  

Daily Responsibilities

  • Lead up to two hikes with an inquiry-based learning style and/or hike rotation activities each day. 
  • Craft and prepare lesson plans before every hike, ensuring you have all the teaching tools and materials before the hike
  • Assist or lead climbing tower or Homestead House as needed. 
  • Participate in camp clean up and tasks as needed throughout the program and during field trip rotations 
  • Participate in the "adopt-a-cabin" program. 
    • Eat meals with your adopted cabin. 
    • Do Rose Bud Thorn and check in with your adopted cabin after the evening program 
    • Lead your adopted cabin on a camp orientation walk and introductory hike.
    • Keep the cabin supplied with TP, cleaning products, etc., and help supervise final cleanup and cabin checkout. 
  • Participate in free time when scheduled. 
  • Lead evening programs.
  • Be in the lodge ready to assist at least 10 minutes before the scheduled mealtime.
  • Assist in meal preparation and cleanup/dish duty when assigned.
  • Help mentor, support, and teach GRP support staff (be a positive role model for all).  
  • Assume other duties that may be assigned during school program days or workdays (including but not limited to kitchen chores, trail maintenance, and other fall projects).

General Duties  

  • Participate in staff training and be willing to take on leadership roles
  • Understand and adhere to the program theme in all aspects of the programs.
  • Be prompt to all program activities, including field trips, evening programs, staff meetings, etc.
  • Attend staff meetings including session meetings, debriefs, and daily staff meetings
  • Keep your first aid kit well stocked and your radio charged at all times.
  • Be a nurturing role model to all campers and staff.
  • Abide by and enforce all camp rules.
  • Serve in any capacity needed in the event of an emergency.
  • Assist with chores before, during, and after School Program sessions. 

Essential Functions

  • Work in a team environment supporting child enrichment in the outdoors
  • Function well in a community living environment with little personal space
  • Able to work non-traditional hours befitting a residential summer camp
  • Hike approximately five miles each day on varied terrain and steep inclines
  • Work several days in a row, sometimes with little rest
  • Be comfortable and work effectively in an outdoor or natural setting
  • Demonstrate mature judgement in high-stress situations
  • Maintain confidentiality when faced with sensitive issues 
  • Effectively communicate in both verbal and written communications
  • Lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds, specifically during a 2-night 3-day backpacking course
  • Maintain good personal hygiene, health, and well-being without assistance of others
  • Minimum of 21+
