The Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC)

Paul Smith’s College is a small, private master’s, baccalaureate, and associate degree granting institution located on a 170-acre campus on the shores of Lower St. Regis Lake in Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. The Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) is located just north of the main campus on 3,000 acres of an array of Adirondack ecosystems, including boreal forest, peat bogs, marsh and mixed hardwood and coniferous forests.  With over 25 miles of trail, the site includes boardwalks, bridges and overlooks.  Access to the variety of habitats is excellent due to the reduction in trail grade and removal of rocks and roots in order to encourage minimal-barrier nature trail enjoyment.  The facility is a focal point within the Adirondack Park for activities for all ages and ability levels.  The VIC’s mission is to facilitate accessible outdoor experiences of ADK ecosystems through education, recreation, research, and the arts.  We are committed to provide outdoor educational experiences for the local and regional P-12 communities utilizing our exceptional facility.

Position Summary:

The VIC is seeking a creative, outgoing, and experienced part-time employee to re-establish an environmental education program for grades P-12.  This person will help develop and implement a strategic plan for VIC education programs that is integrated and non-competitive with existing programs within the Adirondack Park.  This person will also provide professional expertise and oversight to student interns.  We are looking for someone who is willing to explore opportunities to grow and improve our programs and strengthen our impact. This person will work cooperatively with VIC staff and other Paul Smith’s College departments, including at the Adirondack Watershed Institute.  The position requires considerable public contact and is based at the VIC.

This is a part-time, 12-month, position with sick leave benefits and a number of college benefits (e.g., gym membership, winter trail pass, etc.)
