The typical duties include: 

  • Maintaining road infrastructure utilizing a variety of heavy equipment (typically dozer, grader, dump truck, tilt trailer, and excavator as needed) throughout the Alpine Area of Southeast Region in a variety of challenging conditions and terrain.
  • Leading the Alpine Heavy Equipment Crew including instructing and directing another employee, planning, scheduling, arrangement, and assignment of work, with a focus on prioritization and efficiency.
  • Performing preventative maintenance (in consultation with region mechanics) to heavy equipment.
  • Arranging for equipment rentals, including type and timing, as needed for projects.
  • Completing all appropriate paperwork pertaining to crew activities.
  • Overseeing and directing contractors as needed to support Region Engineering staff.  
  • Assisting other programs as needed, including but not limited to timber sale road maintenance and snow plowing; recreation site and recreational use roads maintenance and improvement; emergency road repairs to DNRs road infrastructure; special projects where heavy equipment operations are required; initial attack support for fire control, etc.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ability to operate a pickup-sized vehicle in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment such as CAT 143H grader, CAT D-5 dozer, excavator, vibratory roller, 10 cubic yard tandem axle diesel dump truck and 20-ton tilt bed trailer, backhoe w/ front end loader, 40-foot boom truck, power brush cutter and various hand tools needed for maintenance (welder, cutting torch, etc.).
  • Ability to perform minor adjustments to heavy equipment, troubleshoot, and identify needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of state motor vehicle laws, including those pertaining to the use and transporting of heavy equipment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Washington State Forest Practice standards (rules, RMAP procedures, requirements), state laws, and department procedures.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks
