Overview/Principal Function

In partnership with the board of directors, lead the Chattanooga Audubon Society to keep its mission, vision, values and strategies focused and communicated to staff, donors, volunteers, members, and the community.


General Agency Management

  • Oversee all programs, services, activities, and facilities to ensure that program objectives are met.
  • Responsible for hiring, supervising, and termination of volunteers, contractors, and staff according to board directed protocols.
  • Work with the board in developing, adhering to, and regularly updating a strategic plan.
  • Work with the CAS board of directors to develop and implement an annual budget, calendar of events, and plan of action for the fiscal year.
  • Assume responsibility for the accurate recording, depositing, and reporting of all CAS monies received by the CAS office and staff, and assist Treasurer with monitoring of the budget.

Board Support & Leadership

  • Provide accurate, timely information to the CAS board of directors on activities, business and property status, concerns and needs. Report monthly at board meetings; attend other committee meetings as requested by committee chairperson.
  • Bring all appropriate issues and policy decisions to the board in a timely manner so that they are addressed and resolved.
  • Assist the board in board development.
  • Provide all board committees with staff support where necessary.

Event Management/Income Generation

  • Assume leadership role in planning and implementing all special events working in coordination with appropriate CAS board committees and other staff.
  • Assist board and board committees with all fundraising efforts.
  • Develop events and other programs to increase CAS revenues, visibility, and membership.


  • Supervise and participate in the welcoming of visitors and members to CAS properties; cultural and environmental interpretation of CAS properties, facilities, and exhibits; and gift shop sales.
  • Work with appropriate committees, staff, and volunteers to maintain sanctuary structures, trails, grounds, and facilities and to ensure appropriate stewardship practices as possible.
  • Ensure that all staff and volunteers who interact with the public do so in an informed and effective manner.


  • Ensure regular communications through newsletter, social media, and other appropriate channels.
  • Serve as the chief spokesperson for CAS in carrying out the organization’s mission. This will include, but is not limited to, television appearances, radio programs, appearances before civic groups, businesses, and government bodies, and maintaining a close working relationship with other entities which value and utilize CAS resources.
  • Establish and maintain contact with key individuals in local government, other nonprofit agencies and the business sector to further the agency’s goals and reputation.


The Chattanooga Audubon Society seeks a highly motivated self-starter to work closely with the Board of Directors in managing our small not for profit organization. Duties include supervision of a small staff and a large corps of volunteers to manage educational programs, upkeep, and conservation on four sanctuaries.
