The South Alabama Land Trust (SALT), a nationally accredited and mission‑driven conservation organization, seeks an inspiring and strategic Executive Director to lead the next chapter of land conservation success along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Building on 36 years of impact—including major conservation wins and a strong reputation for excellence—this role offers a rare opportunity for a visionary leader to shape the future of one of the region’s most respected environmental nonprofits.
The Executive Director is SALT’s chief executive, strategist, and ambassador and will guide organizational direction, strengthen partnerships, expand conservation outcomes, and ensure operational excellence across all facets of SALT’s work.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of SALT’s executive are diverse! The executive director must function as a CEO who makes sophisticated judgment calls but also as an operations manager who can tend to the more mundane operations of a small business. The successful candidate will not only have the ability to seamlessly switch gears, but will welcome those opportunities.
Land Acquisition & Land Stewardship
- Lead all aspects of land acquisition projects, including property evaluation, negotiations, due diligence, closing and final documentation.
- Build and maintain a robust pipeline of land conservation opportunities by cultivating relationships with landowners, realtors, , government representatives, and other influencers/stakeholders.
- Oversee stewardship of SALT-owned lands and conservation easements to ensure long-term ecological health and compliance.
Strategy & Vision
- Champion SALT’s mission and guide the organization’s strategic direction, ensuring alignment with long‑term conservation goals.
- Translate strategy into actionable annual work plans and measurable outcomes.
- Serve as a compelling communicator of SALT’s vision to partners, donors, elected officials, and the public.
- Ensure all programs and operations meet Land Trust Accreditation Commission standards.
Staff Management & Board of Directors
- Lead, mentor, and support SALT’s staff of three full‑time employees, fostering a collaborative, high‑performance culture.
- Cultivate a positive, mission‑driven workplace that attracts and retains talented staff and volunteers.
- Maintain strong, transparent communication with the Board of Directors and support the work of the Board’s Executive, Budget & Finance, Development, and Land Acquisition committees.
- Organize and facilitate quarterly Board meetings and ensure effective governance practices.
Operations
- Oversee day‑to‑day operations to ensure organizational efficiency and financial health.
- Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with staff and the Board.
- Monitor cash flow, financial reporting, and project budgets with accuracy and clarity.
- Ensure SALT is equipped with the tools, technology, and systems needed to excel.
Development
- Lead SALT’s fundraising strategy, working closely with the Development Committee to set goals, evaluate progress, and adjust tactics.
- Build strong relationships with donors; identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward supporters at all levels.
- Expand SALT’s membership base and community engagement.
- Secure grant funding to support operations, land acquisition, and special initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission‑driven organization.
- Strong strategic thinking, communication, and relationship‑building skills.
- Experience in land conservation, real estate transactions, or environmental stewardship is highly desirable.
- Ability to manage complex projects, balance multiple priorities, and make sound decisions.
- A passion for conservation and a commitment to protecting Alabama’s natural landscapes.
COMPENSATION, BENEFITS
- Salary range: $100,000–$125,000, commensurate with experience.
