The Mission
The RMBS exists to promote the science-based management of the bighorn sheep, educate the public about their life and habitat, and assure the sportsman’s rights in proper opportunities.
The Opportunity
The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society (RMBS) is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization into its next stage of growth. This is a role for a strong, organized leader and proven fundraiser; someone who can grow and diversify our revenue, win competitive grants, guide the infrastructure expansions that a growing organization needs, and turn the passion of our members, volunteers, and partners into lasting results for wild sheep.
The ED serves as RMBS’s chief executive officer and the manager of all RMBS activities. Reporting to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors (EBoard), the ED works within Board-approved budgets and policies while partnering closely with our Conservation Director, Board committees, and volunteers to deliver on the RMBS mission in Colorado and throughout the Mountain West.
What You’ll Do
Fundraising & Grant Writing
- Develop and lead an annual fundraising plan with the Board and Fundraising Committee that grows and diversifies revenue across individual giving, major gifts, sponsorships, events, membership, and grants.
- In coordination with the Conservation Director, research, write, and submit grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government sources. The ED will also manage the grant calendar, budgets, reporting, and compliance for awarded funds.
- Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, sponsors, and life members.
- Strengthen the return on the annual banquet, tradeshows, and other signature events, working with the respective committees and volunteers.
Leadership & Strategy
- Partner with the Board on strategic planning, then translate the plan into annual priorities, measurable goals, and clear accountability.
- Lead and support staff and volunteers, including working closely with the Conservation Director to align conservation programs with fundraising and organizational priorities.
- Oversee and coordinate the RMBS Regional Representative Program, with responsibility for providing Regional Representatives with the contacts, resources, communication, and organizational support necessary to effectively conduct regional outreach and activities.
- Represent RMBS with members, donors, wildlife agencies, conservation partners, and the public.
Finance & Operations
- Prepare the annual budget with the Treasurer for Board approval; monitor budgets, cash flow, grants, and financial controls throughout the year.
- Build and maintain the systems, procedures, calendars, and records required to keep operations organized, efficient, and well documented.
Board & Member Relations
- Serve as a non-voting ex-officio member of all Board committees and provide the Board with timely monthly reports, financial reviews, and recommendations.
- Prepare the Annual Report to the Board and membership, covering finances, major programs, and a summary of activities.
- Grow and engage the membership, keeping members informed and connected to RMBS’s work.
What Success Looks Like in the First Year
- A written fundraising plan is in place, revenue is growing, and an active grant pipeline is producing new awards.
- Key donor, sponsor, agency, and partner relationships are strong and actively stewarded.
- The Board receives clear, timely financial and operational reporting and has confidence in how RMBS is run.
- Budgets, procedures, calendars, and records are organized, current, and accessible.
Who You Are
Required
- Leadership experience in a nonprofit, association, or comparable organization.
- A proven fundraising track record, including securing grants and major gifts.
- Strong grant writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling, and compliant proposals and reports.
- Solid financial management, budgeting, and operational skills.
- Experience working effectively with a volunteer board of directors and committees.
- Highly organized, with excellent written, verbal, and relationship-building skills and the judgment to manage competing priorities.
- Ability to travel within Colorado, including some evenings and weekends for events.
Preferred
- Experience in wildlife conservation, hunting, or outdoor membership organizations.
- Familiarity with wildlife agencies, wild sheep management, or Western conservation issues.
- Experience with fundraising events, auctions, and donor database (CRM) systems.
Compensation
Compensation: $7,500 per month ($90,000 annually).
Reasonable pre-approved business and travel expenses are reimbursed under RMBS policy. Per the RMBS Bylaws, the Executive Director is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Board, under the terms of an independent contractor agreement.
