The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) was founded by amateur naturalists in 1874 and has played a major role in the conversation of our region. The Museum recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and completed a strategic plan focused on encouraging a love for nature, levering science and collections for conservation, and using our own voice to be here for nature.
The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking a reliable, attentive, detail-oriented Facilities Associate to assist with daily operations and the security and care of the facility. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with a wide range of responsibilities and tasks, has excellent communication skills, and possesses good judgement.
The Facilities Associate’s regular schedule with be Mondays-Thursdays (32 hours per week) with flexibility to work an additional fifth day as needed.
Areas of responsibilities include:
- Conduct daily opening of the building, acting as the first point of staff on-site and conducting rounds to open the building for staff. Requires early mornings, with a typical start time of 6:30AM or 8:30AM (as assigned). May be required for early openings or adjusted schedule to close the building as needed.
- Conduct regular building walk-throughs checking that areas are secure and ensure building systems are functioning properly (HVAC, water pumps, elevators/lifts, generator, fire suppression systems, pest control, elevators/lifts).
- Conduct monthly building checks as assigned on fire life safety systems, AEDs, First Aid. Report inventory needs promptly.
- Reception of all contractors for scheduled work or emergency repairs – Providing access, directing to work area, communicating the issue and what is needed, following up with the Security Manager and Building Engineer on results or additional needs.
- Receiving, logging and distributing Museum deliveries.
- Ensuring trash/recycling and paper shredding bins are available and ready for pick-up.
- Check for fire hazards (fire extinguisher checks, kitchen equipment, heaters, pilot lights).
- Support Museum vehicle check-out and parking reservations.
- Conduct access card creation and support card and key distribution.
- Monitor security cameras and safety/security patrols, including providing escort for staff working with cash.
- Respond to emergency situations within and directly outside of the Museum (fire alarms, medical emergencies, natural disasters, etc.).
- Support the Special Events team with table, chair and equipment set-up/tear-down for Museum events and programs.
- Assist with security functions such as crowd control and ID checks for 21+ events.
- Complete full incident reports for documentation of Museum incidents with guests, staff and volunteers.
- Support the cross-training of new staff on key responsibilities as assigned by the Safety and Security Manager and Operations leadership.
- Daily stock of staff vending machine.
- Assist with building maintenance projects as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements:
- Proven team player with strong communication skills and customer service skills who is approachable and responsive.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Intuitive decision-making and response.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting, climbing (stairs & ladders), crawling and lifting of moderately heavy loads up to 50lbs.
- Valid California driver’s license and clean vehicle operation record.
- Current Guard Card certification through BSIS (or willingness to obtain).
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
- Bilingual preferred.
Pay: $23/hour.
Time Commitment:
A weekly schedule of Monday-Thursday is required (32 hours per week) which may go up to 40 hours as needed. Position requires being on-site early in the mornings to open the building.
Evening, weekend, and holiday availability may be required. The San Diego Natural History Museum is open to the public every day except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
