ABOUT THE MASS AUDUBON FELLOWSHIP IN BOSTON

The FAO Schwarz Fellowship is an intensive, transformative two-year experience in the world of social impact. Fellows work at leading nonprofit organizations in Boston, New York City and Philadelphia. Each organization is deeply valued in their communities and has a strong record of delivering high-quality services that address critical issues of social inequity and producing consistent results. The Fellowship is a two-year commitment that pays $55,000 in year one (includes $2,000 start of Fellowship bonus) and $60,000 in year two (includes $3,000 end of Fellowship bonus). In addition to the FAO Schwarz Fellowship, the Fellow will participate in Mass Audubon's Environmental Fellowship Program for the first 14 months of their term.

DIRECT SERVICE

The Fellow will help young people learn about climate change, explore nature, and take action, working with Mass Audubon's school programs education team to advance climate education in Boston-area schools. Assignments focus on providing mentorship and support to Mass Audubon’s Statewide Youth Climate Leadership Program (YCLP) and hands-on education in the Boston area.

The Fellow will:

  • Support youth climate leaders. Co-lead monthly YCLP meetings, mentor teens as they choose a policy focus and organize events, and help plan the statewide retreat and participation in Advocacy Day. The Fellow will attend events across Massachusetts and use year-end feedback to improve the program. In year two, they’ll speak at a YCLP event and develop a plan for an alumni network.
  • Teach in Boston-area communities. Working alongside an experienced educator, the Fellow will learn to lead nature and climate lessons at sanctuaries, schools, community spaces, and summer camps. In year two, they’ll take the lead on selected programs.

STRATEGIC PROJECT

The Fellow's strategic project work will revolve around mobilizing and advocating action on climate change. The Fellow will lead two projects that help Mass Audubon expand climate education and bring more young people into climate action.

The Fellow will:

  • Find out what young people are learning. Design a statewide climate education survey with guidance from Mass Audubon’s evaluation director. Train staff mentors and Youth Climate Leaders to collect responses, then share what they learn through publications, presentations, webinars, and staff discussions.
  • Open more doors to youth leadership. Build relationships with partners in environmental justice communities and create an outreach plan for each region to broaden access to the Youth Climate Leadership Program. The Fellow will also develop training and support for youth leaders, staff mentors, and partners. In year two, they’ll assess the outreach effort and recommend what comes next.

TYPICAL WORK SCHEDULE

The Fellow will be based either at Mass Audubon's Boston Nature Center or Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in the Boston area (Lincoln), and will work a typical 9-5 Monday-Friday work week, with the exception of some weekend and evening meetings or events with youth climate leaders two to three times per month. Both locations have access to public transportation.

We anticipate that the Fellow will spend three days per week in the office and at least two days of teaching in person per week at the school or community location, depending on the season and program schedule.
