About the Position

The Invasive Species Crew Leader leads field teams conducting surveys and control work for invasive plants and animals across Oʻahu. Work takes place in natural, urban, and suburban environments and may include remote, off-trail, and rugged terrain.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and train field crews conducting invasive species surveys and control.
• Help plan field operations, schedules, crew deployment, and logistics.
• Conduct mechanical and chemical control of invasive species.
• Ensure fieldwork follows safety, pesticide, decontamination, and other project protocols.
• Collect and oversee accurate field data and GPS records.
• Use GPS and GIS tools to produce maps and guide field activities.
• Maintain field equipment, vehicles, project gear, and the baseyard.
• Work in and around helicopters and operate project vehicles on and off road.
• Communicate with property owners and members of the public.
• Help maintain a positive, effective, and safe field team.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: 3–5 years of field experience related to natural resources management.

Applicants should have:

• Knowledge of invasive species and natural resource management.
• Experience identifying target invasive species and common native species.
• Experience with mechanical and chemical control techniques.
• Leadership skills and the ability to train and provide feedback to field staff.
• Strong planning, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience collecting field data and navigating remote areas with and without GPS.
• Mapmaking experience using ArcGIS.
• Experience using small mechanized equipment, such as chainsaws.
• Basic computer skills.
• A valid driver's license.
• Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with manual transmission.

Physical Requirements

Applicants must be able to:

• Backpack, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
• Hike and camp in remote, rugged terrain and inclement weather for up to five consecutive days.
• Work outdoors in conditions that may include heat, cold, heavy rain, mosquitoes, and difficult terrain.

Training & Certifications

Depending on assigned duties, employees may be required to obtain or maintain certifications and training related to:

• First Aid/CPR
• Hazard Communication
• Helicopter safety
• Restricted-use pesticides
• Chainsaw operation

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to identify a wide variety of native and invasive plants and animals.
• Experience supervising, training, and evaluating employees.
