Administered by Orange County Department of Education, Inside the Outdoors has been a leader in hands-on science and social science programs since 1974. Today, we serve over 100,000 students annually through field trips, classroom programs, and community events located at parks, schools, and other open spaces throughout Orange County, CA. Our programs all align with Next Generation Science Standards and California's Environmental Principles & Concepts as they immerse students in science and studying environmental systems.

Our field naturalists lead field trips for students in grades TK-12 at parks and other open spaces. We are seeking 2-3 new educators to join our team in Winter 2026.

Duties include:

  • Deliver environmental education and cultural history field trip programs to pre-K through 12th grade students from schools across Orange County.
  • Enforce safety rules for students, classroom teachers, and chaperones.
  • Hike on trails for up to one mile and traverse stairs and uneven terrain while carrying equipment.
  • Work as a team with other ITO staff to set up and take down programs.
  • Handle a variety of animals, including rats, snakes and insects.
  • Promote Inside the Outdoors and deliver programming during public community programs and partner events.

Qualifications include:

  • This is an entry-level position. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a related subject such as biology, ecology, earth systems science, or education; or at least a year of related experience via volunteering, environmental science or education classes, or work experience.
  • Experience working with school-age children, especially in an outdoors environment, is highly preferred.
  • Experience working and collaborating with diverse communities is strongly desired.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under OCDE’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Applicants must be available from 8-2:30 PM at least three days a week, with positions available up to five days a week.

Note: Our field trip programs run through June 2026, with the option for Field Naturalists to stay on and work summer camp programs in July 2026.
