Job Description

Take the lead both in the field and behind the scenes to help Project Managers deliver the best results for each project by making the most effective use of knowledge and resources. Build and showcase expertise in one or more areas that contribute to the successful execution of ecological restoration projects and initiatives.

Participate in design, develop work plans, and lead teams in the field.  Reforestation, stream restoration, meadow building, and habitat enhancement are everyday activities. Occasional trail, bridge, and stormwater feature construction.

Work Balance

Work consists of about 70% in-field tasks and 30% planning and administration. Most projects take place in Pennsylvania, NY, West Virginia, and Maryland. Home most evenings, with multi-day trips both in and out of state, and a few multi-week trips each year.

Requirements

This senior-level, permanent role calls for a broad range of experience in habitat design, soil and hydrology restoration and construction, streambank restoration, large-scale plantings, and invasive species management. Experience in applied research, team building, and budget management is also highly valued. The successful candidate is a person that has decided they want to dedicate at least five years to mastering the science and technique of building authentic, durable natural systems. The successful candidate should also feel comfortable with GIS and regular data collection, but expertise is not required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Project Team members to inform and perform work in the field as it pertains to soils, planting, erosion control, invasive control, construction, and other activities required to fulfil contractual requirements
  • Assign tasks and goals to Technicians and other crew members in the field, ensuring safe working conditions for yourself and others, training and overseeing Technicians and other crew members in the field
  • Use and actively seek opportunities to learn best practices in ecological restoration, land management, invasive control, site stabilization, and other disciplines to ensure a high-quality result
  • Study, practice, and apply skills from a particular area of specialization to achieve a level of subject matter expertise in disciplines such as, but not limited to:
    • Hydrology or Soil Science
    • Arboriculture, Silvology, or Dendrology
    • Ecological Site Evaluation and Botany
    • Invasive Control
    • Equipment Operation
  • Support Project Managers by maintaining plans, adhering to schedules, and collecting information to be used for documentation and reporting purposes
  • Maintain accurate and timely Project, Planting, Expense, and Pesticide Logs; maintain accurate Timecards and Time Off Requests for anyone under your supervision
  • Actively participate in company communication systems and platforms, including but not limited to email, Teams, apps, and others as assigned.
  • Maintain active licenses and certifications.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications (each will be tested during the interview process):

  • Ability to identify native regional plant species and their proper habitats
  • Ability to identify invasive species and prescribe the best means of eradicating them
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools safely and efficiently
  • Ability to effectively use and navigate Microsoft Office Software
  • Current industry-related licenses, certificates, and trainings
