We are looking for a motivated, field-oriented Field Technician (Ecology/Botany) to join our team and support ecological field surveys, vegetation monitoring, and habitat restoration projects. In this role, you will conduct plant community surveys, collect botanical data, identify plant species, and assist with restoration activities. If you are passionate about botany, comfortable working outdoors, and have experience with vegetation sampling and plant identification, this position offers the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in ecological research and conservation. This is a field-based position. You will work independently in the field while receiving supervision, training, and support remotely from our project manager via email, phone, and video calls. Daily check-ins and digital data uploads are required.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct plant community surveys using standardized protocols (line-point intercept, quadrat, cover, and density methods).
- Identify native and invasive plant species using keys, field guides, and dichotomous keys.
- Monitor habitat conditions and document invasive species presence and spread.
- Collect and press plant specimens for identification and documentation.
- Record and enter field data accurately into digital databases and GPS units.
- Assist with long-term ecological monitoring projects, including vegetation composition, structure, and health assessments.
- Maintain and monitor restoration sites, documenting progress and survival rates.
- Maintain field equipment, including GPS units, cameras, data loggers, and hand tools.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and field procedures.
- Compile and organize field data for analysis and reporting.
Requirements
- Previous experience in ecological field work, botany, vegetation monitoring, or related field is preferred. Entry-level candidates with relevant coursework, internships, or volunteer experience are encouraged to apply.
- Ability to identify common native and invasive plant species in your region.
- Experience with vegetation sampling techniques (quadrat, line-point intercept, cover estimation) and plant specimen collection is a plus.
- Familiarity with GPS units, GIS software, and data entry platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
- Ability to hike long distances over rough terrain, carry equipment (up to 40 lbs), and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain detailed field notes.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
