The Fire Protection District is seeking a qualified and motivated Fire Prevention Specialist to join our Fire Prevention Division. This is a non-safety, non-sworn civilian position focused on fire and life safety inspections, plan review support, wildfire prevention education, defensible space inspections, and community risk reduction activities. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Fire Marshal or the Fire Marshal, the Fire Prevention Specialist provides technical and administrative support to fire prevention programs and serves as a key point of contact for the public, contractors, and District staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct fire and life safety inspections of residential, commercial, and special-use occupancies
- Assist with plan review for new construction, remodels, tenant improvements, and special events • Perform defensible space and wildfire mitigation inspections and provide public education
- Interpret and explain fire codes, ordinances, and District policies to the public and stakeholders
- Provide code information and interpretations for property owners, contractors, developers and members of the public
- Prepare inspection reports, notices of violation, and reinspection documentation
- Support administrative code compliance and prevention-related permit processes
- Maintain inspection records, databases, and electronic filing systems
- Operate District vehicles in a non-emergency capacity
- Assist with post-incident administrative fire cause documentation as directed
- Coordinate with other agencies and stakeholders on fire prevention related initiatives
Desirable Qualifications/Experience:
- Proficiency in California Defensible Space Programs and wildfire risk reduction principals
- Experience performing inspections and interacting professionally with the public, contractors, and other public agency staff.
- Competence in public outreach, community education, and customer service
- Wildland firefighting background
- Advanced education with course work in forest management, fire science, natural resources, environmental science, or other related fields
- Technical working knowledge of California Public Resources Code 4291
- Understanding of the California Forest Practice Act & Forest Practice Rules
- Familiarity with California Environmental Quality Act
- CSFM Home Ignition/Defensible Space Inspector
- California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 1A-1D,2A, 2B
Knowledge/Skills:
- Fire Prevention principles, inspection practices, and plan review concepts
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to acquire and learn new skills quickly
- Expertise in wildfire prevention, defensible space regulations, and community risk reduction strategies
- Knowledge of applicable local ordinances related to fire and life safety, California Fire Code, California Building Code, Title 19 and Title 24 CCR, and applicable NFPA standards
- Public education and customer service techniques
- Office procedures, record-keeping practices
- Strong interpersonal abilities and conflict resolution skills
- Task prioritization and deadline management
