Fish and Wildlife Technicians perform a variety of technical assignments to support the management of New York State fish, wildlife, marine and ecology resources.

The general duties of a Fish & Wildlife Technician 2 are to carry out activities that promote the protection, management, and restoration of New York State's marine species and these species' habitats.

More specific tasks include the following activities:

  • Participation in the processing and data management of fishery harvest data:
    • communication with commercial fishing stakeholders
    • processing Vessel Trip Report (VTR) data
    • extensive use of internal and external database programs
  • Possible participation in the management of marine fish and shellfish resources in State waters:
    • conducting fish surveys and biological sampling programs
    • assisting in the management of State aquaculture program
  • Miscellaneous tasks include preparation of reports, subordinate staff supervision, participation in meetings, and aiding other Marine Resources units. Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates and 70.4 transfer eligibles):
    Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.

Minimum Qualifications: Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.

Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described.

Important: If you qualify under an option requiring the possession of semester credit hours, you must submit a list of qualifying courses or photocopy of your transcript(s) with your application. Include the course title, number of semester credit hours for each course, the name of the college or university and the date (or expected date) of completion. Applications submitted without a list of relevant courses will not be considered. If you qualify under an option requiring specialized work experience, you must include on your application a clear and detailed description of your qualifying technical experience. Vagueness or omissions will not be interpreted in your favor.

This is a provisional position. When the Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 civil service exam is offered, the position-holder must take the exam and score within the top three.
