The North Dakota Forest Service is the state agency that administers cooperative programs statewide. The agency provides technical assistance relating to the management of private forestlands, urban and community forests, tree planting.  The agency works in cooperation with rural landowners, urban residents, communities, rural fire districts, schools and other governmental entities to direct and strengthen forestry services.  The agency also operates a forest tree nursery at Towner specializing in the production of conifer (evergreen) tree stock.  The nursery is the sole supplier of evergreen seedlings in North Dakota.  The North Dakota Forest Service owns and manages approximately 13,290 acres of state lands.

Forest Stewardship Specialist provides field services and support statewide.  The Specialist serves as liaison to cooperating agencies providing technical and financial assistance for the management and protection of native, riparian and planted forest resources.  Duties include both office and field responsibilities promoting Forest Stewardship and related programs and directing landowner assistance to implement forestry best management practices.  The Specialist assists the Stewardship Manager with technical and financial assistance to private landowners.
