The reporting location for this position is Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area in Borrego Springs, CA. This position will work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).

The Forestry Aide will be part of the district's Cultural and Natural Resources Program, and will conduct natural resources surveys utilizing existing protocols, including for special status species such as western burrowing owl. The Forestry Aide will gather, input, maintain, and report on data gathered by staff using paper datasheets, GPS units, spreadsheets, databases, and geodatabases. The incumbent may monitor special events, filming, or projects. The Forestry Aide must be able to safely operate various 4WD vehicles and tools associated with the above tasks. Additionally, the incumbent must be able to work safely in high heat, desert environments, and remote conditions.

Season Details: This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months.  The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment. This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license.  State housing may be available. Projected season begs November 2026 and ends July 2027, with hours dependent on project needs and funding availability. This position is designated as not telework eligible. New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternative range when applicable. Up to two positions will be filled.

Minimum Qualifications: Eligibility may be reached by education or experience. Either completion of at least 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from a recognized accredited college or university in forestry or fire science, natural resource management, conservation, or a closely related subject; or three months of experience performing sub-profressional work in forestry, fire prevention, fire suppression and control, natural resource management, or other related work.
