Forestry Project Manager

Remote-first position based in OH, PA, or WV

Bosland Growth is a forest carbon project developer focused on restoration and conservation of degraded mine land in Appalachia.  Founded in 2022, we are employing a carbon financing approach to heal mine scarred landscapes in Appalachia through reforestation. Collaborating with partners, including ecological restoration and tree planting contractors, carbon development consultants, NRCS, the US Forest Service, and others, we work on private land impacted by past surface mining activities in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.  To ensure that new forests thrive and provide ecological benefits, we use the Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA), a proven method developed by the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI).

We are recruiting a forester or natural resource professional located in Ohio, Pennsylvania or West Virginia to join our small team. The Forestry Project Manager will report to the Vice President of Landowner Engagement, who is based out of Bosland’s Pittsburgh office. The Forestry Project Manager will mostly work remotely but must be based in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, or northern or central West Virginia.  Occasional work at the Pittsburgh office will be required.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Primarily responsible for management of our reforestation projects, including initial site evaluation, forest restoration planning, contractor mobilization and oversight, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Provides support and expertise for our landowner outreach and education activities, including developing presentations and written content for outreach and education, helping to organize and present at outreach and education events.
  • Works closely with the Vice President of Landowner Engagement to develop and advance relationships with interested landowners and partners, serving as a point of contact and providing technical expertise on forestry and other technical matters.
  • Creates customized RFPs for contracted services; conducts bidding and contract procurement for site preparation, planting, and other tasks.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with preferred contractors and vendors across the region, ensuring predictable and high-quality project outcomes.
  • Prepares forest management plans, forest inventory analysis, environmental assessments, and forest histories; coordinates inventory operations; performs on-the-ground examination and delineation of forest areas for management and assesses forest conditions; develops guides and instructions for field procedures.
  • Supports early-stage concept development through site evaluations, risk analysis, rough order-of-magnitude valuation and cost estimating.
  • Collaborates with 3rd party consultants in carbon project analysis, validation and verification, in line with Verra standards and methods

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (minimum requirement) in forestry, forest ecology, natural resource management, or related discipline
  • 5 or more years of professional experience focused on forestry and forest management and/or significant experience managing ecological restoration projects
  • Experience with contract administration and overseeing the work of contractors toward successful project outcomes
  • Experience developing, planning, implementing and monitoring forestry projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, GIS systems, and GPS
  • Knowledge of regional forestry of central Appalachia, vegetation management methods, resource management, basic soil science, plant and tree identification, and restoration ecology
  • Familiarity with forest carbon methods, standards, and accounting frameworks a plus
  • Prior work on mineland reclamation a plus
  • Experience with drone operation a plus
  • Strong technical, administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work with a variety of people with diverse interests and temperaments
  • Highly organized and motivated self-starter with the ability to prioritize
  • Creativity, sense of humor, “can do” spirit, collegiality, flexibility, strong desire to learn
  • Will likely need to use a personal vehicle for work duties. Bosland will reimburse mileage at the federal rate
  • Familiarity with local threatened and endangered species, including habitat needs and legal protections
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal permits required for environmental/forestry projects
