Northern Stewards is a small consulting forestry company in northern Vermont, serving private forest landowners interested in responsible forest stewardship. Activities are diverse and include forest inventories, forest plan preparation and planning and implementing forest stewardship activities.
Northern Stewards has an immediate opening for a Forestry Technician out of its Waterbury office, with some remote office work negotiable.
The Technician's primary tasks will be to conduct forest inventories throughout northern Vermont under the direction of a Forester, requiring travel and work in remote locations. The technician will collect forest data from inventories, manage and organize data and prepare basic forest plans and GIS maps. Additional tasks will include marking property boundaries, marking, prepping and monitoring forest stewardship activities.
This position requires outdoor field work in sometimes difficult terrain, all season conditions, inclement weather conditions coming into contact with ticks, poison ivy, and mosquitoes. The technician must be in good physical condition, have a driver’s license and reliable transportation and able to work alone when required.
Required Qualifications:
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or related field, with at least 1 year field experience in a forestry related setting.
- Knowledge of and ability to identify, Vermont’s trees, shrubs and invasive plants.
- Knowledge of sawtimber quality and ability to differentiate between timber products in a standing tree.
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Office, Excel, GIS and GPS.
- Ability to navigate to and within properties and forest plots using GPS, map and compass.
- Ability to collect and enter data into inventory software.
- Vehicle with valid drivers license and willingness to travel to and between sites up to 1.5 hours from Waterbury
Desired Qualifications:
- Willingness to learn and participate in forester related professional development, including toward forester license.
- Pesticide applicators license (Cat 2 and Cat 10)
- Chainsaw training and familiarity (Game of logging I-II)
- Familiarity with timber harvest practices and industry standards
- Familiarity with Vermont’s Current Use program
- Familiarity with Vermont’s water quality rules (AMP’s) related to logging.
