Under the direction of Supervisor, Environmental Science, plans and implements environmental, historical, and cultural programs serving all ages and interest groups. Provide the general public with answers to inquiries regarding the environment, ecology, and other related issues.

Essential Qualifications
Bachelor of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or institution of higher education in the field of life science, ecology, earth sciences, wildlife conservation, or other natural history curriculums. Degrees in other fields acceptable provided applicant has experience, training or supplementary education in life sciences.

Thorough knowledge of environmental and ecological concepts; ability to lead public groups and connect with people of all ages; must be well-organized, creative, and a good team player; some knowledge of office practices and procedures; ability to utilize computers; basic knowledge of handling administrative matters in the absence of direct supervision. A minimum of one-year experience as interpreter is required. Considerable walking and some lifting required. Must be able to be out-of-doors in all types of weather. Ability to adjust work schedule as required for the efficient operation of facilities and programs. Must have a valid driver's license.

Parks and Facilities
The Environmental Science Department is responsible for the operation of the Environmental Education Center (EEC) and the management of 550 acres of park land in the western portion of the Great Swamp Basin of the Passaic River in Bernards Twp, New Jersey. There are 9.5 miles of hiking trails through diverse habitats consisting of swamp, forest, pond, and meadows. This year-round center offers hundreds of hours of educational programming and special events for participants of all ages. Six full-time naturalists provide an extensive range of programs at the EEC and in other Somerset County parks, focusing on local environmental issues, natural history, ecology, native plants, and outdoor recreation. Four summer science camps are also conducted. The EEC attracts 50,000 visitors annually and generates income of $200,000. Our mission is to stimulate awareness and understanding of the natural world in order to foster a sense of responsibility for its care.

Essential Functions

1. Design, plan, and deliver environmental education, outdoor education, virtual, and season-based programs for people of all ages in cooperation with other Environmental Science Naturalist staff. Work flexible schedule, as needed. Schedule public programs on a seasonal basis.

2. Design, plan, deliver, and co-lead an 8-week summer camp program.

3. Prepare and deliver assigned school, scout, library, senior center, garden club, and birthday party programs.

4. Recommend purchase of materials, and equipment necessary for operation of programs.

5. Provide environmental, historical, cultural, ecological, and other regional information upon request.

6. Staff front desk on weekends and as assigned. Fulfill administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to, program registrations, bookshop transactions, and end-of-day financial reports.

7. Conduct ecological and environmental studies as directed by the Manager or Supervisor.

8. Prepare program reports, including revenues and expenses.

9. Participate in planning and execution of special events.

10. Assist with press materials, reports, and displays for public view.

11. Administer CPR and First Aid to park visitors, as needed. Obtain certification in other areas at the request of the Park Commission (i.e., defensive driving, canoe safety and instruction, fire safety, search and rescue, etc.).

12. Perform trail patrol in assigned areas and assist park visitors, as needed.

13. Exercise supervision over part-time and seasonal employees, and volunteers when required.

14. Assist in execution of Park Commission land and wildlife management programs.

15. Assist in the physical operation of the Environmental Education Center building and grounds and all associated task and duties.

16. Present a positive image as a Park Commission representative to all facility users and the public.

17. Follow Park Commission policies and procedures.

18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Park Commission.
