Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS Partnerships & Civic Engagement (PCE) Directorate will host a Gateway Community & Partnerships Engagement Fellow.

The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

Secretary’s Order 3434 – Strengthening Coordination with Gateway Communities – establishes the Department of the Interior’s policy to enhance coordination and strengthen partnerships with gateway communities. It directs the National Park Service (NPS) to conduct ongoing gateway community engagement at every NPS unit, including national scenic and historic trails, through an identified Gateway Community Coordinator. The Gateway Community Fellow will provide essential capacity by developing tools and resources and offering direct support to NPS units in implementing SO 3434 and other national strategic priorities.

This AmeriCorps position will assist the NPS PCE directorate with the development and sharing of tools, resources, communications, and training opportunities for NPS staff and partners, and will engage in projects that build capacity, expand expertise, and enhance relationships between park units and nearby communities. The member in this role will work with national offices and Federal sister agencies to develop case studies, best practices, and tools for parks. This fellowship directly supports implementation of Secretary’s Order 3434 – Strengthening Coordination with Gateway Communities and Section 131 of the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences Act, and may include direct support to individual parks as well as contributions to additional national strategic priorities. Through this fellowship, the fellow will gain practical skills in partnerships and community engagement while creating a pathway toward future careers with the NPS and the Federal government.
