SkyTruth Shepherdstown, West Virginia
Deadline Mar 15, 2019
Job Type Paid permanent

At SkyTruth we believe that if you can see it, you can change it. We are searching for a Geospatial Analyst to join our team and help us visualize the impact of human activity on the environment through the use of satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

In this role, you will monitor and report on global environmental incidents like oil spills, storm inundations, deforestation events, or mine failures in near-real time to improve disaster response and keep the public informed. You will use a broad spectrum of geospatial tools and technologies, cultivate and sharpen your technical and analytical capacity (e.g., scientific programming, statistical analysis, web development), and hone your project management skills.

This position is based in Shepherdstown, WV, and will report to both the Technical Program Director and the Geospatial Engineer.

What You’ll Do:

  • Discover, research, and analyze geospatial data sources within SkyTruth’s program areas
  • Create static and dynamic maps, time series animations, and video clips for SkyTruth’s social media and web properties
  • Regularly produce imagery of environmental issues, like the expansion of mining impacts, growth of oil and gas infrastructure, or deforestation by searching, downloading, processing, analyzing, and annotating a variety of satellite imagery
  • Regularly produce posts for SkyTruth’s social media and blog, that (a) demonstrate the value of satellite imagery for global environmental monitoring, and (b) provide specific intervention points for the public to demand policy changes (e.g., tailings pond failures provide arguments against mining elsewhere).
  • Assist with the supervision and direction of interns

The Must-Haves:

  • BA or BS degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Cartography, or a related field
  • Experience with geospatial software tools, including Esri and Google products, and geospatial data structures (e.g., shapefiles, GeoJSON, and GeoTiff files)
  • Experience with common GIS and image processing techniques, including map reprojection, digitization, and feature extraction
  • Strong design skills, with an eye for clean and simple graphics, intended for a  non-technical audience
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • A passion for environmental protection and conservation

The Nice-to-Haves:

  • Familiarity with QGIS, Google Earth Engine, GDAL, and other spatial tools
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform
  • Strong interest in or experience with Python for data management, statistical analysis, and visualization
  • Strong interest in or experience with JavaScript and relevant web mapping platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Carto, Mapbox, Leaflet, Google Maps)
  • Interest in or experience with graphics production and video editing software, such as Final Cut Pro

Compensation and Benefits

The minimum salary for the Geospatial Analyst is $37,500 with the potential for a higher salary based on previous experience. We also offer a generous benefits package including a medical plan, 403(b) option with organizational match, paid vacation, and paid sick leave.
