The Vermont Association of Conservation Districts (VACD) is hiring a full-time GIS Specialist to work with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in Vermont. The position involves using geospatial imaging to assist with conservation planning and other work performed by NRCS and Vermont’s conservation districts, assisting with emergency response, training others on GIS software and techniques, and providing technical support.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, develop and implement systems and databases for geospatial data
- Develop and maintain geospatial data on desktop and mobile applications
- Ensure data meets appropriate data accuracy and content standards for quality assurance and quality control
- Standardize geographic data
- Research and conduct tests on new tools
- Build, update, and maintain database, GIS software, and hardware
- Administer and troubleshoot applications and GIS solutions
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in geographic information systems, geography, cartography, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field with demonstrated capabilities in GIS
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency with GIS desktop software and data management, including ArcGIS Pro
- Ability to effectively configure, process, and analyze data, including vector and raster datasets
- Familiar with GPS data collection and data management, including ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123
- Experience working with different coordinate systems, map projections, and datums
- Familiarity with standard cartographic methods, theories, and principles
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented and analytical thinker
- Ability to independently manage multiple assignments, determine and set job task priorities, and work with limited direct supervision
- Must be eligible to be cleared to use the USDA computer network
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Portal, or another web mapping system
- Experience using AutoCAD and DWG files
- Knowledge of multiple programming languages
- Strong team player
- Outstanding critical thinking skills
Location:
Hybrid position with work required in the NRCS Office in Colchester, VT.
