Great Old Broads for Wilderness is the only national environmental organization for older women. With a 40-year history of protecting the lands and waters we share, Great Old Broads for Wilderness has achieved major wins for public lands on the local, state, and national levels.

Great Old Broads for Wilderness is now searching for a full-time Grassroots Leadership Program Manager to guide big-picture work for local leaders. The incumbent will supervise staff, guide strategy, and develop projects. This is a fully-remote position.

Responsibilities 

Supervise staff

  • Ensure the organization’s grassroots leadership program is run to the highest standards.
  • Guide professional development for 1 full-time and 1 part-time employee, modeling excellent grassroots organizing skills, finding outside training resources, and conducting ongoing staff development to ensure staff have the skills needed to successfully engage a grassroots network.
  • Hold 1:1 meetings weekly, with additional team meetings on a biweekly basis.

Guide program development 

  • Create an overall plan for grassroots leadership, including recruiting, developing, and retaining members and chapter leaders.
  • Ensure membership more accurately reflects the face of American women by growing the diversity of race, class, political perspective, and location, working with communications team staff as needed.

Lead program evaluation

  • Establish metrics for program success in collaboration with grassroots leadership program staff and the executive director, to be finalized by January of each year in alignment with annual planning.
  • Collect data on program performance, working with communications team staff as needed.
  • Analyze data and suggest ways to continue successes and resolve challenges.

Provide high-level support to grassroots leaders

  • Develop and manage the on-boarding process for new chapter leaders.
  • Develop and manage the retirement process for chapter leaders.
  • Resolve any conflicts between members and between members and staff, demonstrating organizational values and high standards of professionalism and respect.
  • Support committee calls by taking notes and supporting staff and members as needed.
  • Participate in national coalition calls as delegated.

Develop an annual calendar of resources

  • Develop a calendar of resources by January of each year, tied to the annual planning process.
  • Include both materials that are related to specific needs (such as a leaders’ handbook or an event planning guide) and evergreen materials that can be used to fuel engagement (such as a PDF guide to making art on public lands).
  • Seek support from grassroots leadership program team members in the drafting process, including suggesting ideas and reviewing drafts.
  • Have plan approved by supervisor.

Develop a plan for communications with chapter leaders (to include at a minimum a monthly newsletter and blog)

  • Develop any updates to the communications plan by January of each year, tied to the annual planning process.
  • Seek support from grassroots leadership program team members in the drafting process, including suggesting ideas and reviewing drafts.
  • Include the communications team in planning to ensure alignment with the overall communications calendar.
  • Have plan approved by supervisor.

Write materials 

  • Write drafts of materials as needed, in a style that is appropriate for grassroots organizing and that suits the organizational tone.
  • Seek support from grassroots leadership program team members in writing, including reviewing drafts.
  • Work with communications staff for copy edits and graphic design.
  • Publish/share materials by deadlines.

Manage monthly meetings of leaders

  • Plan monthly Broadband Connect meetings.
  • Prepare any materials needed for the meetings.
  • Facilitate the meetings.
  • Follow up on any needs after the meetings.
  • Seek support from grassroots leadership program team members, including reviewing plans and assisting with facilitation.
  • Evaluate meeting success annually and develop and manage other meeting types, if needed.

Manage platforms

  • Add contacts that are shared by local chapters to membership funnels on a biweekly basis.
  • Assign new paid members with chapters on a biweekly basis.
  • Facilitate Zoom for all programmatic and fundraising webinars, approximately 1-3 per month.
  • Manage the @greatoldbroads email account and leaders’ Google groups (such as suspending old email addresses, adding new groups, bulk adding new members, changing passwords, adding new email addresses for people, creating new email addresses for new chapters).
  • Manage other platforms as needed.

Manage data collection

  • Develop plans to collect data from Broadband leaders and from other members as needed.
  • Implement plans, including working with grassroots leadership, operations, communications, and executive staff as needed to develop tools.
  • Ensure the roll-out of tools is smooth and well received.

Support public speaking

Within strict 501(c)(3) guidelines, with any uncertainty resolved by executive director.

  • Serve as a media spokesperson (as directed by executive director.)
  • Make presentations at public events as needed.
  • Serve as a panelist or conference speaker as needed.

Support administration

  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Make member renewal calls.
  • Participate in annual and strategic planning.
  • Participate in annual budgeting.
  • Support grant deliverables.

Other duties as assigned.

Travel

The manager may travel up to 10 days per year, depending on needs.

Location and hours

The manager will work from home. The schedule is flexible within the following limits:

  • 40 hours of work per week are required.
  • A minimum of four working days per week, Monday through Friday, is required.
  • At least 4 hours per work day must be within the window of 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Eastern US time.

Occasional hours may be in the evenings, depending on needs.

Pay

The manager will be paid a rate of $70,000 per year.

Essential qualifications

  • 3-5 years in a community organizing role.
  • 1-2 years in a role managing community organizers.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results (such as network growth, increased engagement, or policy wins) as an organizer.
  • Fluency in English, with impeccable written and oral skills.

Desired qualifications

  • Native fluency in Spanish.
  • Organizing in a remote work environment.
  • Organizing on a regional or national scale.
  • Organizing around environmental issues.
