BACKGROUND The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) is a 501c3 charity and the state’s oldest and largest citizen’s conservation organization. AWF’s mission is to promote the wise use and responsible stewardship of Alabama’s wildlife and related natural resources. One of AWF’s primary focus areas is conservation education, and part of AWF’s comprehensive conservation education strategy includes outdoor, inquiry-based learning opportunities on school grounds through our Habitat Learning Lab Program (previously called Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program).

For over 20 years AWF’s Habitat Learning Lab Program has provided a support system and technical assistance to Kindergarten-12th grade schools for the sustainable development and utilization of schoolyard habitats and outdoor learning stations on school grounds as educational tools for teachers and students.  The core outdoor learning stations in a Habitat Lab include sensory, butterfly and pollinator gardens, frog and toad habitats, songbird habitats, log decomposition stations, and weather stations.  To help schools use their Habitat Labs as educational tools, the AWF created the Junior Wildlife Scientist Program along with other educational resources.
