Informal Education Internship

This internship is ideal for candidates who are interested in the educational side of Zoo work. There will be opportunities to create and teach education programs, and learn to present various animals for programs. Interns will be exposed to a mix of education practices, learn the role of biofacts, and how to design programs on-site for visitors and for students visiting on field trips. Interns will also assist with animal care of the education program animals, consisting of hedgehog, parrot, small lizards, amphibians, and scorpions. There is also potential to conduct research related to education. Interns will work directly with our Director of Education and Education Programs Manager to support education department needs.  

Responsibilities

  • Assist with education programming:
    • Teach school programs and assist with preparation for programs
    • Create hands-on or interactive activities and crafts to be used with programs
    • Assist with toddler programs onsite
  • Interactions: informal and formal interactions with Zoo guests specifically to forge connections between our mission, our guests, and our animals
  • Assist with animal care of education program animals, as needed.
  • Potential animal handling for programs: lizard, hedgehog, invertebrates, etc., (small transportable animals). Training required.
  • Other related duties as assigned
