Information Officer – Science Communication

NEIWPCC is seeking a full-time information officer to provide scientific and technical expertise in advising, writing and publishing communications products for the Long Island Sound Study (LISS).

What You Will Do
As an information officer for NEIWPCC, your work will be heavily geared towards implementing the LISS Communications, Outreach, and Engagement (COE) Strategic Plan and supporting integration of the newly revised LISS Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) with a specific focus on the Informed and Engaged Public goal. You will:

  • write articles and feature projects on LISS’s online communications channels, develop website content and perform website updates, support the development of public engagement content, draft and manage social media content, assist with photography and videography initiatives, and provide scientific, technical, and programmatic communications support on various initiatives, including a new State of the Sound report.
  • participate in occasional site visits, programmatic meetings, conferences, and summits.
  • directly oversee and manage the work of other communications and outreach team members and help to shape future communications work for the LISS program.

Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a skilled writer who is passionate about communicating how science and management can help sustain and protect urban waterways from emerging threats, and:

  • have a master’s degree in marine environmental science or policy, engineering, political science, English, journalism, communications, or related field.
  • have at least three years of professional experience in the development of outreach materials, as well as website and print publication design.
  • be reliable, have a strong attention to detail, and able to effectively establish working relationships with scientists, environmental managers, and stakeholders.
  • a proven ability to construct scientifically valid and informative communications materials, the ability to shoot and edit photos and videos, and experience with WordPress, Adobe InDesign, and various social media platforms is desired. 

Candidates with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent. 

Logistics
This full-time position will work eight hours per day and is based in Stamford, CT, walking distance from the Metro-North Railroad Station. Duties will be performed largely in an office setting and will require occasional travel, for which a valid driver’s license and private means of transportation is required. This position is not eligible for telework.

What We Offer
The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $65,000 to $80,000. NEIWPCC offers an outstanding comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees:
