PROJECT BACKGROUND AND GOALS

American Forests has been actively engaged in over 1,300 tree-planting projects worldwide since 1990. To better quantify our impact and share the stories of our work, we are seeking an intern to meticulously collect and organize details about these planting projects. This project is perfect for someone looking to dig into American Forests project archives, identify and tell unique stories that span over 30 years of reforestation history, and gain experience working with project databases.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Reforestation Project Archive Intern will play an important role in organizing our reforestation project records. Tasks will include gathering important details from electronic and paper files. This information will be used for communication materials and maps showcasing American Forests’ work over the last 30 years from American ReLeaf, Global ReLeaf, Reforest America, and other iterations of our national and international tree planting programs since 1990.

This internship provides experience in data management and offers an opportunity to delve into reforestation conservation history. You will work alongside our program staff, gaining insights into reforestation projects and their impact.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect key project from documents, spreadsheets and American Forests Magazines.
  • Document project locations, tree numbers, and project funding on Airtable. 
  • Collaborate closely with our programs team to ensure accuracy and completeness of project details.
  • Identify opportunities to showcase reforestation success stories.

QUALIFICATIONS

While we do not expect any one candidate to possess all of these qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal skills and qualities:

  • The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented with an interest in history, research, restoration, and/or forestry. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required. 
  • Must be able to take directions and have strong independent working capabilities.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Individual must have a passion for forest restoration and the overall mission of American Forests. 
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in forestry or conservation is a plus. 

LOCATION & WORKING CONDITIONS

American Forests’ headquarters is located in downtown Washington, DC. This position can be a remote position.

TRAVEL 

Light travel, less than 5% of the time may be required. Most of the time will be spent in a general office environment.
