Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield (WICR) will be hosting an Interpretive Media Steward.

The Interpretive Media Steward (Steward) will collaborate with staff and volunteers to inventory and assess current offerings in our print and digital media, website, and social media. Once properly inventoried and prioritized the steward will work to update and develop content for publications, audio tours, the park website, and our Facebook account.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Create a Content Matrix for the WICR website and make a prioritized list for updates and additions. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    •  Use reports in the Content Management System for the WICR website to pull all exiting pages to a spreadsheet.
    • Visit each page to note if content is evergreen or how often it should be updated, and if it currently needs an update
    • Review websites from NPS sites that have been well kept up and resemble an exemplary example.
    • Note pages that are not utilizing best practices.
    • Draft suggestions for new pages or shared content that should be pulled into the WICR website.
  • Assist in the development of a social media plan to generate more content, leverage existing content, and incorporate NPS wide themes and communications initiatives. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • Review current draft social media plan.
    • Become familiar with the NPS Communications SharePoint and the Digital Communications NPS community.
    • Attend monthly Communications calls.
    • Work with supervisor and mentor to develop a plan for weekly/monthly themes.
    • Work with volunteers, staff, or personally identify gaps in social media quality images and work to take pictures that address these gaps. 
    • Draft posts that follow the social media plan and weekly/monthly themes
  • Assess non-personal service offerings including publications, waysides, and video/audio tours. Make suggestions for updates or gaps that should be filled. Develop a plan to include appropriate publication materials in the NPS app and plan to promote. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • Review publications in light of interpretive themes and frequently asked questions. Assess if information should be primarily provided in paper print format or converted primarily to digital format accessed through the NPS app.
    • Assess topics that are not covered in publications that are regularly asked about. When appropriate, work with staff to develop content that answers these regular visor inquiries.
    • Assess current waysides for content updates that include new perspectives and untold stories. 
    • Review content from the current audio tour. Work with staff to update and re-record the audio tour. Add completed tour to the NPS app
    • Add content as appropriate to the NPS app for WICR.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Interest in preserving and communicating important information and stories related to the history of the United States. 
  • Speak, read, & write in English
  • Must be between the ages of 18-30 years old at the start of the position. 
  • Able to use computer and familiar with basic programs

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Area of study including communications, history, interpretation, education, or natural/cultural resources.
  •  Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.
  •  Experience writing interpretive content for website, social media, or publications.
