JOHNS BROOK LODGE HUT CREW 

ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) works to protect New York State wild lands and waters by promoting responsible outdoor recreation and building a statewide constituency of land stewardship advocates. Since 1922, the organization has worked to increase access to the backcountry by building trails, conserving natural areas, and developing a stewardship community that supports the ethical and safe use of New York’s outdoor spaces. A member, donor, and volunteer-supported organization, ADK reaches across New York through its chapters to inspire people to enjoy the outdoors ethically. 

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Johns Brook Lodge (JBL) Hut Crew is responsible for performing the daily operations of the lodge during the summer full-service season, including meal service, cleaning, supplies pack-ins, and information services. Meal service includes prepping, cooking, and serving meals to guests. There are also two cabins and three lean-tos on property that staff clean between guest reservations.

The Hut Crew is also responsible for communicating information about reservations to the front desk at Adirondak Loj, as well as providing guests with accurate, objective trail information, while supporting the messaging and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club, surrounding responsible outdoor recreation and education.

JBL Hut Crew will also periodically have the support of a “Summer Host” volunteer. This volunteer position is to help support staff in guest interactions, and cleaning tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Food Services – 60% 

  • Execute food serviceat lodge between June and August
  • Transport food to Johns Brook Lodge and trash/recycling from Johns Brook Lodge weekly 
  • Set up and serve meals and beverages to guests
  • Make morning and evening announcements to guests
  • Wash and return plates, dishes, and eating utensils to storage areas
  • Assure cleanliness of dining and kitchen areas
  • Assistin the preparation of food as necessary 
  • Daily set up and professional presentation of the food stand and menu items
  • Basic cooking and grilling of standard menu items
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness in all food service areas, ensuring a clean stand and food preparation that meets health code standards 

Guest services – 25% 

  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere to guests and hiking passersby
  • Provide accurate trail information 
  • Assist guests with the check-in/check-out process 
  • Communicate with DEC on rescues, providing first aid when necessary

Property Maintenance – 15% 

  • Handle daily maintenance and monitoring of propane and water systems
  • Execute daily cleaning operations in the lodge, cabins, and lean-tos 
  • Manage vault privy system, change barrels as needed
  • Complete rotating weekly cleaning chores inside the lodge

QUALIFICATIONS 

Basic: 

  • A passion foroutdoor education and a commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club 
  • Self-driven and comfortableworking both independently and with a team 
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for work-related travel 
  • Experience with basic cooking and baking 
  • Ability to work outdoors, sometimesin inclement weather 
  • Ability tonavigate 5 miles by foot over rough terrain with heavy pack loads of 40–50 lbs. 

Preferred: 

  • Some experience in a food service setting 
  • Some experience in a hospitality setting 
  • Some experience hiking in and around the Johns Brook Valley

Supervises: N/A 

Classification: Full-time, Seasonal, non-exempt 

Dates: Mid-May to Labor Day; option to stay through Indigenous Peoples’ Day 

Salary/Wage: $16/hour
