Birches School seeks an enthusiastic, collaborative Outdoor Educator to begin in August 2026.

Birches seeks teaching faculty who demonstrate an interest in fully participating in the life and activities of a highly engaging elementary and middle school and who will help further Birches’ mission. Successful candidates will exhibit a great work ethic, cultural competency, strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to inspire young people.
Summary of Position: The Outdoor Educator (OE) at Birches supports the design and implementation of Birches’ K-8 wilderness scope and sequence curriculum, including the development of hands-on, practical skills such as safe fire building, tool use, shelter construction, teamwork, and cultivating environmental awareness and a passion for the natural world. In addition, the OE guides Birches’ Afterschool and Explorations programs and teaches in these programs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Model and instill a love of learning and inquiry about the natural world
- Facilitate and participate in engaging outdoor skill sessions with children during the school day and in Afterschool
- Organize and coordinate curriculum development and programming with other faculty
- Communicate with parents/caregivers about the student experience in the wilderness and Afterschool programs
- Possess flexibility, eagerness for growth, and passion for the philosophy of the school
- Attend staff meetings and cover regular lunch and snack duties
- Participate in school events, including curriculum night, open houses, campouts, and other community occasions
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree with specific training in outdoor education or related field; Master’s degree in outdoor education or a related field is strongly preferred
- Minimum of three years experience working with elementary/middle school students
- Knowledge of outdoor safety standards and best practices
- Ability to hike, adventure, and build confidence in others outdoors
- Demonstrated experience with multicultural and anti-bias teaching strategies and materials that reflect cultural competence
