Kent County Parks is seeking a motivated, field-oriented professional to support both the Volunteer Services and Natural Resource Stewardship Programs with a strong restoration focus. This position plays a key role in leading stewardship workdays, supporting volunteers, and implementing hands-on ecological restoration across park properties.This role requires reliable availability for scheduled stewardship events, including many Saturdays during peak seasons. The position works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator/Habitat Restoration Projects Specialist to deliver high-quality volunteer experiences while advancing restoration goals. Paid trainings with the West Michigan Conservation Network is a perk.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support volunteer stewardship workdays, including some Saturdays
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, training, supervision, and retention
  • Plan and support volunteer events, including site prep, logistics, and tracking volunteer hours
  • Identify, map, and control invasive species using best management practices
  • Perform field work including backpack herbicide application and mechanical control methods
  • Support restoration projects including planting, site assessments, and habitat improvement
  • Assist with outreach, education, and public engagement efforts
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and treatment records in accordance with state guidelines
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and safety-first environment for volunteers and staff
  • Collaborate with partners and support engagement with community groups

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in natural resource management, ecology, or related field (degree preferred or in progress)
  • Knowledge of invasive species identification and control methods
  • At least 2 years of experience in volunteer coordination, event leadership, or environmental programming
  • MDARD Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 30–60 days)
  • Valid driver’s license

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong plant identification skills (or willingness to learn quickly)
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Safety-minded with attention to detail

Technical Skills (Preferred):

  • Experience with GPS/GIS and/ or 123 / Field Maps data collection tools
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
