Undertakes data management and analysis duties related to a wide range of data, including biological monitoring, forest bird population monitoring and surveys, invertebrate sampling, conservation translocations, predator control and mapping species locations. Manages and enhances KFBRP database, data collection apps, data entry, creating and writing analyses and reports, and geographic information system (GIS) data management, mapping, and digitizing. Drives project vehicles to work sites. Maintains project equipment used for data collection, which includes computers, weather stations, automated recording units, radios, tablets, and inReach devices. Provides technical support for all project staff with technology equipment, database, and computer systems. Enters and validates field data into computer databases for analysis. Catalogs and manages data from all specimens and samples collected in the field. Prepares data summaries, technical reports, and manuscripts to be used for presentations or publications. Assists with data collection in the field for the recovery of native forest birds and natural resource protection and management (mosquito surveys, predator control, forest bird surveys). Assist in planning for field operations and helicopter operations support. Assist with the maintenance of field equipment, field camps, vehicles and office grounds. Assists with outreach presentations and events. Requires to camp in remote areas for up to eight (8) days at a time. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in relational database design, GIS analysis, and biological fieldwork.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of principles and techniques of avian ecology, population biology and conservation. Knowledge of integrated data collection app design. Knowledge of design and maintenance for database and computer stations. Knowledge of statistical analysis models and software.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Proficient in GIS software (ArcPro and ArcGIS Online, PostGIS), data collection apps (Survey123) and databases (Access). Ability to update databases and make database queries, e.g. using Python and SQL. Ability to use Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), Program R, and other software programs to undertake analysis and reporting. Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet computer applications skills. Ability to use GPS equipment. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Demonstrated scientific writing skills. Ability to take detailed field notes and follow a prescribed data collection system, and perform data entry into spreadsheets and databases. Strong verbal and oral communication skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) and Flight Follower within (12) months of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike at least eight to ten (8-10) miles on obscure trails, carrying up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Ability to live, set up, and work from isolated field camps under primitive conditions for up to eight (8) days.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Master’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences, Avian Ecology, Statistics, or related field. Strong interest and background training in conservation or ecology. Experience working with Hawaiian flora and fauna. Experience in control of invasive species. Experience publishing peer-reviewed papers.
