Kids Day Camp & After School Leader/ Senior Educator

HAWKs Kids OC is launching and looking for enthusiastic, trained naturalists to lead our kids day and after school camps. Experience with children with special needs a plus. 

  • HAWKs Kids senior educators have 3-5 years experience working with children and/or the outdoors. 
  • Prepared and able to sub-in for Field Operations Director or Field Operations Manager or support operations out of the field
  • Regular contributions to HAWKs games, activities and curriculum creation that is used across the organization and becomes a part of programming
  • Outstanding performance when communicating with leadership, explorers and parents when there is an incident or accident
  • Successful ongoing project oversight and independent work. Examples include media library, end-of-year field notes, social media or new curriculum
  • Senior educators help explorers create community, forge connections with nature and instill a sense of stewardship for our earth
  • Educators lead a group between 8-14 explorers with a co-educator on hikes and other nature activities in designated green spaces.
  • Senior educators help HAWKs leadership develop nature-based lessons  focused on ecological systems. They teach nature based games, songs and activities to other educators and explorers.
  • Teach trail safety and no trace behind philosophy 
  • They are responsible for the safety and well-being of explorers during their time with HAWKs Kids. They ensure the safety of the group as they hike across streams, encounter wildlife and make their way along the trails
  • Communicate with parents prior and after programming through registration and messaging platform
  • Diffuse encounters between explorers that are not respectful or appropriate 

Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in sciences or education
  • 3-5 years in nature-related field and education
  • Ecology, biology or other background that lends itself to nature-based teaching
  • Imaginative and intutive educator who can share knowledge in a way that children relate and engage with. 
  • Ability to identify the group’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs during hikes and programming
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds 
  • Ability to hike 5-8 miles with a day backpack that carries a water bladder, first aid kit, arts and craft supplies and other neccesities. 
  • Fluency in region’s native plants and native animals
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Punctual 
  • Current CPR certification for children and adults
  • Experience leading nature games, songs and activities in a group setting
  • Experience leading other educators in a group setting
  • NOLS Wilderness First Aid certification a plus
