The Laboratory Technician is expected to contribute in many ways to research projects in the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Ecology Lab at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, including carrying out tasks and recording results for field and laboratory work related to gulf beaches, oyster reefs, and other coastal habitats.

Job duties to include:

  • Process samples in the laboratory (e.g., sorting of benthic fauna samples, collection and analysis of oyster tissues for disease detection, filtration of water for chlorophyll/ total suspended solids quantification, homogenization of sediments for stable isotope analyses).
  • Conduct field research including boat and shore-based sample collection and water quality monitoring.
  • Maintain field and laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain organized and accurate data records.
  • Coordinate and participate in educational outreach events.
  • Coordinate and provide logistical support for field activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Associate’s degree in marine science, Biology, or related environmental science field.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Field experience including operation of trucks and boats, benthic coring, transect sampling, and water quality monitoring.
  • Field and/or laboratory experience with Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) and other benthic invertebrates.
  • Competence with infaunal invertebrate identification and classification using dichotomous keys.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, particularly data management in Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Educational outreach experience, including ability to communicate research concepts to a broad audience.
  • Ability to travel as needed and work long/ nonstandard hours for the collection of samples and other data.


  • Experience with laboratory and/or field equipment maintenance- including vessel maintenance.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Current valid scuba diving certification.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS

SALARY: $15 -$20.67 /HOURLY ( $31,200- $42,993.60 APPROX. ANNUALLY)
