Job Description:

The Lake Tahoe Ambassador Program is a youth stewardship training program (beginning at age 14).  Participants will interact face-to-face with the public, sharing information about Lake Tahoe’s natural environment and ways to protect it. Ambassadors will be stationed at various popular beaches, trailheads, and visitor centers around the lake during peak visitor times, usually Thursday-Monday. In addition, Ambassadors will be trained in related environmental skills, including species identification, trail work, public outreach, and more.

Ambassadors will:

  • Attend in-person training sessions to learn about the uniqueness of Tahoe’s environment and how to protect it
  • Motivate and inspire community members and visitors to recreate responsibly while enjoying Lake Tahoe’s parks and beaches
  • Share information about ways to recreate in Tahoe, favorite hikes and bike trails, and more
  • Model good stewardship by picking up trash, handing out pet waste bags, talking with the public about best practices, and more
  • Collect visitor-use data by tracking observations and interactions with the public
  • Present natural history information to the public
  • Attend additional trainings outside of public work days on related skills like natural history, trail maintenance, species identification, public speaking, research techniques, and more

Required Qualifications:

  • A willingness to learn about Tahoe’s environment, sound stewardship practices, and local ordinances
  • Self-motivation and drive to approach visitors to engage them in conversation about how to care for the environment
  • Capable of communicating and interacting in a respectful and inclusive manner with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Good time management and punctuality, including responding promptly to emails and phone calls, and a strong ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to promptly and efficiently use Gmail, Google Drive, smartphone apps, and other technology for work purposes
  • Capable of standing and walking outdoors in variable weather conditions for up to 8 hours at a time
  • Must have transportation to and from work sites throughout the Tahoe Basin
  • Must be available for in-person work from June to September, including the 4th of July, with no major away dates planned

Location:

Ambassadors will be stationed throughout Lake Tahoe, working at a variety of locations in both South and North Lake Tahoe. You will be placed closest to where you live, but some additional travel to attend trainings is required. We encourage all applicants to apply, even if transportation is a barrier. The Alliance can offer transportation support in certain situations.

Timeframe:

Summer work hours are from June 22, 2025, to September 1, 2026. Participants must be available for the majority of the summer with no major vacations planned. The time commitment is 20-30 hours per week.

Compensation:

Ambassadors earn $19/hour (based on experience).
