Host Site Details: Northern California Regional Land Trust Land Conservation Program Assistant
Organizational Background:
The Northern California Regional Land Trust (NCRLT)'s mission is to assist landowners, communities, and public agencies to voluntarily protect land and other natural resources. In collaboration with public and private partners, we see our contributions to this space as increasing the financial and technical resources available for the conservation of working and wild lands in Northern California; supporting a network of partners in advancing strategic conservation informed by North State communities and landscapes; and providing leadership and visionary strategies for land planning and protection. Our service area includes Tehama, Glenn, and Butte County, and stretches from the western slopes of the Sierra-Cascade Crest, across the Sacramento River Valley, to the eastern slopes of the North Coast Range. Within this approximately 6,000 square mile region, we prioritize the conservation of farms, ranches, and open space important to our region’s economic well-being, ecological health, and quality of life.
Organizational/Program Goals 2025-2026: In the next 11 months, the Stewardship Program is completing environmental compliance and improving watershed stewardship for Deer Creek Preserve (600 acres) to protect critical habitat for salmonids and drafting conservation agreements to protect riparian assets in Butte Creek canyon. Our organization is working in partnership to build capacity for freshwater resource protections and to pursue groundwater recharge projects. Our Conservation Program is preparing prospective properties for grant funding of conservation easement, finalizing establishment of conservation easements and associated management plans, conducting regional resource planning and educational outreach related to soils health and the options available of voluntary protections for landowners with key resources or agricultural operations.
Member Service Plan Overview and Outcomes: The Member will gain confidence in stewardship and land protection strategies for an estimated 15,000+ acres. By service term end, the Member will have knowledge, skills, and abilities related to conservation easement establishment, conserved property monitoring and reporting, and will be conversant in tools and GIS techniques to support conservation easement grant application preparation. The Member will gain experience leading volunteers and recruiting new volunteers.
