Summer Land Stewardship Internship – Marsh Sanctuary

Compensation

About Us

The Marsh Sanctuary is a 90-acre nature preserve in the heart of Westchester County with trails, open space, a community garden, and a commitment to the protection of wildlife. It is home to resident populations of red fox, bobcat, northern flying squirrels, painted turtles, New England cottontails, wood frogs, migrating songbirds and rare and endangered flora. It serves as a critical link to the Bedford Greenbelt of conservancies that connect thousands of acres of greenspace allowing the safe travel of wildlife throughout the belt. It is also home to year-round environmental education through Marsh Sanctuary’s partner, The Rewilding School.

Position Overview

The intern will work with the Rewilding School’s Program Director to implement land stewardship projects to further enhance the ecological value of Marsh Sanctuary. In this paid position, the intern with gain experience in invasive species management, native plant restoration, native plant propagation, and gain a strong background in the flora and fauna of the Lower Hudson Valley. This is a hands-on-position with training provided.

Schedule & Commitment

  • June 26 - August 28, 2026
  • Full-time, 35 - 40 hrs/wk, Mon - Fri, 8:00am - 4:00pm
  • Location: Marsh Sanctuary, Mount Kisco, NY

Job Duties

  • Remove invasive plants using a variety of hand tools
  • Propagate native plants from seed and cutting
  • Restore and maintain native plant communities
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Identify and protect conservation-priority plants
  • Create interpretive signage
  • Collect data regarding restoration efforts and compile a written report at the end of the season
  • Occasional night or weekend availability may be required

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of physically demanding tasks outside in all weather conditions and with occasional exposure to poison ivy, biting and stinging insects, and wet or hot conditions
  • Ability to complete task independently and follow directions from co-workers and supervisors
  • Ability to carry 40 pounds of gear
  • Strong passion for the environment and outdoor activities
  • Ability to safely use hand tools including loppers, hand saws, string trimmers, hedge trimmers and other tools as needed
  • Basic knowledge of common New York State flora and fauna
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and a good driving record
  • Possess a customer service attitude and comfortable working with kids and the general public
  • Applicant must be available for in-person work in Mount Kisco between June 29th and August 28th with some flexibility to the start and end dates.
