As a Stewardship Technician with the Nisqually Land Trust, you will work collaboratively with Land Trust staff, volunteers, partners, neighbors, and contractors to coordinate and implement land stewardship monitoring and reporting, property maintenance, and habitat maintenance, enhancement, and restoration activities. The Stewardship Technician will work under direct supervision of the Stewardship Manager. Typically, the person in this position spends three workdays in the field and two days in the office each week with occasional weekend or holiday work events.

Tasks will include:

  • monitoring and documenting site conditions on Land Trust owned lands and conservation easements;
  • stewardship recordkeeping;
  • property maintenance work; such as, fencing, gates, signage, and minor demolition;
  • land management tasks (debris clean up, cleanup of unsheltered camps, and identifying and helping with resolution of other encroachment issues);
  • coordinating and hosting volunteer events and activities, including weekend events;
  • identification and control of invasive weeds;
  • planting, maintaining, and monitoring native trees and shrubs;
  • assisting with public events on Land Trust properties; and
  • assisting with communication about Land Trust stewardship activities in our newsletter and on social media.

Qualifications:

  • Able to engage with new people and neighbors easily and interact with all in a respectful manner; communicate in a positive, professional manner; and work well in a team environment.
  • Enthusiastic about working with volunteers, including helping to organize and lead volunteer events.
  • Familiar with western Washington native plants and invasive weeds; and western Washington threatened and endangered species.
  • Excellent record-keeping, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs; familiar with GPS, orienteering, and ArcGIS; and comfortable learning new software programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, forestry, environmental studies, ecology, botany, or related field and a minimum of six months of experience in land stewardship and/or habitat restoration positions.  Or at least 3 years of land stewardship experience.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and vehicle insurance.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and to work independently under physically demanding conditions, including rough and uneven terrain and all-weather conditions. Experience operating and maintaining hand and power tools and equipment.
  • While the position is a non-exempt 40 hour a week job, the applicant should be able to work a flexible work schedule that will include some early morning starts, late finishes, and some weekend work.
  • The Stewardship Technician will be required to obtain and maintain Basic First Aid and CPR certification and Washington Herbicide Applicator License. Any cost for these certifications and licenses will be covered by the Land Trust.
