Job Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Lead Horticulturist to help create and maintain native plant gardens. Your expertise in gardening practices, landscape maintenance, and plant care will be vital in creating functional, sustainable environments that are beautiful and beneficial for wildlife. Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise extra helpers as needed to execute daily tasks efficiently.
- Develop and implement planting and maintenance schedules.
- Perform hands-on gardening tasks such as preparing new garden beds and meadow plots, planting, seeding trimming, fertilizing, edging, and mulching using hand tools and power tools.
- Oversee irrigation to maintain optimal moisture levels and promote healthy plant growth.
- Conduct landscape maintenance activities including soil preparation, pulling weeds, invasive plant management, and landscape design adjustments.
- Manage greenhouse operations, including watering, potting up, seeding, and keeping the nursery organized.
- Ensure all practices adhere to safety standards and environmental regulations while maintaining aesthetic standards.
Skills
- Knowledge of horticulture principles, gardening techniques, landscape design, and plant ID.
- Ability to work at a quick pace while maintaining a high quality of work.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, twist, kneel, lift, push and pull.
- Ability to work in all kinds of weather (hot/cold/rain).
- Experience with irrigation systems, greenhouse management, and growing plants.
- Background in landscaping, horticulture, or environmental field.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools such as pruners, shovels, rakes as well as power tools like weed whackers and machines like sod cutters.
- Ability to lead a team effectively while fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail for scheduling maintenance tasks and managing resources.
- Good communication skills for coordinating with team members and reporting on project progress.
