Fire & Knives is an experiential outdoor skills program that helps young people build confidence, competence, and independence through hands-on learning. Rooted in the belief that appropriate risk and real responsibility are essential to growth, the program teaches practical skills such as safe fire building, tool use, shelter construction, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
Role overview:
The Lead Instructor delivers hands-on outdoor skills programming for children kindergarten- fifth grade, fostering confidence, resilience, and practical abilities through structured, age-appropriate risk-taking. This role requires strong group management and comfort teaching foundational skills such as fire safety, tool use, teamwork, and environmental awareness.
Key responsibilities:
- Facilitate engaging outdoor skill sessions
- Review and understand daily lessons
- Maintain a healthy environment for staff and youth alike
- Maintain a safe learning environment while allowing for challenge
- Lead small groups with clarity, energy and positive culture
- Model responsibility, curiosity, and respect for tools and nature
Requirements
- Participate in a First Aid Training course
- Attend Staff Trainings
Ideal candidate:
An experienced outdoor educator who is confident, organized, and energized by experiential learning.
Position type:
Part-time, recurring (Fall 2026) with Winter and Spring opportunities possible
Schedule:
- Weekday afternoons
- Location dependent on day
