ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Grand Canyon Youth (GCY) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Since 1998, GCY has provided outdoor experiential river expeditions for middle and high school students. Our expeditions range from 1 day to 16 days, along the Colorado River through Grand Canyon, San Juan, and Verde Rivers. POSITION SUMMARY

The Logistics Manager is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day operations of GCY’s warehouse, fleet, and facilities. Duties include managing river operations, the warehouse, vehicles, boat/equipment repair, inventory, expedition food, departing & returning expeditions, etc. The Logistics Manager must demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with employees, youth, parents/guardians, volunteers, vendors, and community collaborators. The Logistics Manager must have strong organization and communication skills.

The Logistics Manager participates in on-call duties during the expedition season and is an integral part of the Operations Team. Some on-expedition time/experience may be necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Logistics (95% of position)

• Ensure all expedition equipment is organized, inventoried, and well-maintained for appropriate expedition allocation in accordance with GCY and permitting authorities
• Oversee the warehouse to ensure its functions are operating effectively and efficiently
• Manage menu templates, order food for group needs, including dietary requirements, and support food packs  
• Hire and manage warehouse support staff
• Support the budgetary process by proposing equipment replacement and expansion purchases and working within budgeted allowances
• Have a risk management mindset: be available for week-long 24-hours/day on-call duties when assigned, and supply each expedition with necessary and quality risk management and emergency response tools
  • Support the management of GCY facilities, including but not limited to: repairs, improvements, snow removal, and landscaping
  • Manage the GCY fleet, ensuring owned vehicles/trailers are in optimal condition, fulfill DOT requirements, have current insurance & registration documentation, have supplies for incident response, and schedule expedition vehicle rentals  
  • Work within the Operations Team to evaluate, provide, and synthesize expedition feedback and respond as needed
• Professionally enforce and assess workplace safety, including policy and procedure compliance
• Maintain and support strong vendor relations
• Manage commissary compliance with Coconino County Health Codes

Admin & Fundraising Support (5% of position)

• Participate in fundraising efforts, as needed
• Support cross-organizational initiatives, as needed
• Implement strategic initiatives, as assigned
• Embody and support GCY culture in all communications and interactions with stakeholders
• Complete performance reviews as needed for direct reports

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree and/or lived experience demonstrating ability to learn, think critically, and work well with others of varying backgrounds
• 3+ years of professional experience in the river rafting industry with working knowledge of river expeditions and their associated gear
• Must have river equipment upkeep and repair experience, including boat patching, and be comfortable using a variety of tools and equipment
• Be in excellent physical condition; have good balance, strength, stamina, and a strong cardiovascular system; be able to lift and maneuver up to 50 lbs of awkwardly shaped objects over uneven terrain, and be able to assist in evacuations as needed
• Pass a pre-employment background and drug test
• Must possess a current driver's license & have a clean driving record 
• Experience driving a Truck & Trailer (CDL not required); fleet management experience is preferred but not required
• Comfortable using common office equipment, including computers and printers, and Google Suite
• Have a working mobile phone
• Current Wilderness First Responder, CPR, and EpiPen Auto-Injector Certifications
• Current Food Manager Certification, or willingness to get certified

 SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE 

• Extensive understanding of river equipment/supplies, maintenance needs, and industry standards for outfitting
• Willingness to work as part of a professional small nonprofit team
• Demonstrated ability to think innovatively and accomplish responsibilities with minimal supervision
• Ability to function as part of a busy work environment (including a shared office with frequent interruptions)
• Strong ability to multitask and prioritize short- and long-term needs, including budgeting and strategic thinking

• Demonstrated ability to manage seasonal staff, including delegation, time management & feedback

WORKING CONDITIONS

• The GCY warehouse is based in Flagstaff, Arizona. The warehouse has heating and cooling equipment; however, part of this job will be performed outside and will be affected by local weather conditions. The employee should be prepared for extended periods of inclement weather, including but not limited to freezing temperatures, snow, wind, rain, and heat. 
• The warehouse and office are a shared workspace, and interruptions are common.
• Some of the day is spent on your feet, actively moving, including bending, reaching, lifting, pulling, pushing, and stretching. There are also extended periods of sitting in meetings and at the computer.
• Ability to work long days performing duties as needed, sometimes into the evening and weekends, especially during the expedition season, March - July
• Some stressful working conditions with short deadlines, evacuations, and changing variables inside and outside of GCY’s control
• This position includes significant independent work interspersed with highly collaborative team activities. 
• The Logistics Manager may be called upon to shift their focus quickly to another task as the organization pivots between priorities throughout the day.
