Position Description

If you love the desert landscape, have a keen eye for organization, and a passion for increasing access to the outdoors, you might be the perfect candidate for our Southern California Logistics Manager! The Southern California Logistics Manager oversees our basecamp operations & logistics systems, making sure that our backpacking/rock climbing courses run smoothly. In a typical week, you’ll be mentoring our logistics staff & making sure our vehicles, gear, and food programs are operating at top notch. The Logistics Manager reports to the Program Director and collaborates with the Program Manager. In addition to our small admin team, you will live and work alongside a tight-knit community of logistics staff and outdoor instructors.

Compensation & Schedule: Salary range is $3,600 - $3,900/month. This is an exempt, full-time, seasonal salaried position from Sept 16 - April 18, 2024. Room and board provided at our basecamp during the program season

Location: This position is located at our Southern California program base in Twentynine Palms, California.

Who We Are

We are Outward Bound California (OBCA). Through challenging outdoor experiences, we teach social-emotional skills like teamwork, leadership, confidence, and compassion. Our programs help our participants (ages 12+, including adults and veterans) embrace challenges and reflect on how they want to contribute to their communities and the world. We offer a wide range of programs, including high/low ropes activities at our San Francisco Challenge Course and rock climbing/backpacking trips in the High Sierra or Joshua Tree. Knowledge & Skills

  • A collaborative leader with excellent organizational & communication skills 
  • Has a deep understanding and personal commitment to equity and inclusion in the outdoors
  • Competent in driving trailers up to 12 ft in length and experienced in outdoor gear/vehicle repair and maintenance
  • Have prior experience with multi-day wilderness expeditionary programs (ex. Outward Bound, NOLS, or other equivalent)
  • Proficient with G Suite and Microsoft 365

Education and Work Experience

  • 3-5 years’ experience in outdoor/experiential education and/or Bachelor’s degree, or any combination of education and related experience
  • Have 1-3 years supervisory experience

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds several times per day
  • Comfortable sitting or standing at a desk/computer 60% of the time and working outdoors 40% of the time

Certification & License Requirements

  • Wilderness First Responder & CPR
  • Hold a valid US or Canadian driver’s license for at least five years
  • California Food Manager Certificate (can be obtained after hire)
  • OSHA 10 Certification (can be obtained after hire)

Onboarding Requirements

  • Able to pass a federal & Live Scan background check, MVR check, and provide current (within the last 4 years) negative TB screen or test results upon hire (cost of all screening paid for or reimbursed by OBCA), and be 21 years of age or older

Responsibilities

  • Staff Mentorship: Supervise a small team of Logistics Coordinators (2-3 people), ensuring they are trained and supported throughout their work. You’ll oversee the staff schedule, manage payroll submissions, provide daily mentorship, and role model a positive work environment
  • Budget Oversight: Handle the logistics budget & oversee expenses.
  • Facility Oversight: Support facility needs, including basecamp operations, maintenance, community gatherings, and staff housing.
  • Vehicle Fleet Management: Schedule and maintain our vehicle fleet. This includes routine maintenance, serving as the on site-manager of vehicle training,  and staying in compliance with transport permits. You’ll also help with driving transports and evacuating students as needed.
  • Equipment Management: Manage equipment inventory & vendor partnerships to ensure that all gear is in top condition for our students.
  • Food Program Management: Manage food safety protocols and allergen cross-contact prevention to keep staff and students safe & well-fed.
  • Risk Management: Ensure safety across our logistical systems. Participate in critical incident response which might require after work hours and could happen during scheduled time off. All staff will uphold Outward Bound’s zero-tolerance policy for incidents of child abuse and neglect as protecting our minor students against abuse and neglect is of the highest priority.
