Overview: The Lolo Trail Steward will work under the guidance of the USFS Ninemile Recreation Specialist and the GBCA Executive Director. The Trail Steward will assist in various trail maintenance projects, restoration activities, and trailside cleanups. They will be expected to be flexible and travel within the Superior and Ninemile districts of the Lolo National Forest. This is a physically demanding job that requires care, precision, and a hard-working mentality.
Location: Huson, MT. Ninemile Ranger District, Lolo National Forest.
Responsibilities:
- Execute trail maintenance tasks including tread repair, drainage improvement, brushing, signage installation, and erosion control.
- Operate and maintain hand tools and power equipment safely and effectively (ie. chainsaws, brush hogs, rock bars, grip hoists)
- Opportunities to assist GBCA Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator with co-leading volunteer work trips in the Lolo National Forest.
- Act as the main GBCA liaison for the Lolo Recreation staff.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old by start date
- Ability to hike up to 10 miles a day in uneven terrain, often carrying a 60 lb backpack and tools
- Ability to work in both individual and team environments
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Endurance to conduct field work in remote settings under strenuous conditions for multiple days
- Willingness to work long hours in all weather conditions
- Valid Driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
Compensation:
Pay Rate: $17/hour
Benefits: $35 per diem when in the field, mileage reimbursement at federal rate, $200 gear reimbursement upon successful completion of the season.
