Osa Conservation is dedicated to protect the globally significant biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula through research, education, and community-based initiatives. As part of this mission, the Montaña al Mar Club engages children and families in environmental education activities that strengthen conservation values while fostering bilingual skills.
This internship will support the club’s educational activities by teaching English to children (ages 7–18) and parents. The classes will be aligned with the club’s monthly education themes and complemented with field trip experiences that integrate and validate English learning in real-life contexts. This internship will be a mix of classroom- and field-based instruction, and will require the intern to execute activities outdoors in remote, field locations.
Purpose of the Internship
The main purpose of this internship is to:
- Provide continuous English language education to children ages 7–18 in the Montaña al Mar Club.
- Offer English sessions to parents and guardians to strengthen family involvement in bilingual environmental learning.
- Integrate English into field trips and experiential learning activities to reinforce vocabulary and communication skills.
- Contribute to building the capacity of local communities in environmental conservation and bilingual communication.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will:
- Plan and deliver English classes (weekly sessions) for children ages 7–18, integrating monthly environmental themes of the club.
- Develop simple curricula and lesson plans adapted to the age group, linking language learning with conservation topics.
- Facilitate sessions for parents to build basic conversational English skills.
- Support field trips to execute English language training in real contexts (e.g., nature hikes, marine activities, community projects).
- Collaborate with local educators and program staff to ensure classes align with the club’s objectives and methodology.
- Encourage active participation and intercultural exchange among students and families.
- Monitor progress through informal assessments, group activities, and reflective exercises.
- Report monthly on progress, challenges, and recommendations.
- Support additional tasks as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the environmental education and English programs.
Duration and Location
- Duration: 9 months (starting in February).
- Location: Osa Peninsula, Puerto Jiménez Costa Rica. Classes will be held in a designated classroom and during club field trips.
Deliverables
The intern is expected to:
- Deliver multiple English sessions per week, aligned with Club’s educational themes.
- Conduct parent/guardian English sessions.
- Participate in regular club field trips and integrate English-learning components.
- Submit a monthly activity report and a final report at the end of the internship.
Benefits and Support Provided
Osa Conservation will provide the following support to the selected intern:
- Domestic flight: One round-trip internal flight to and from the Osa Peninsula.
- Local transportation: Coverage of transportation expenses within Costa Rica related to program activities.
- Housing: Accommodation at the Osa Conservation Marine Center
- Monthly stipend: $100 USD to support basic personal expenses.
- Meal support: A food budget equivalent to three meals per day
Qualifications
- Preferred undergraduate degree, currently working toward an undergraduate degree, or relevant career experience.
- Experience teaching or tutoring English to children (experience with adults is an asset).
- Strong interest in environmental education and conservation.
- Intermediate Spanish preferred.
- Excellent communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills.
- Enthusiasm for working in rural communities and field settings.

Supervision
