Maine Trail Crew - Field Coordinator 

Dates: April 15 to October 15, 2021

Rate of Pay: $21/hour

The Field Coordinator will be responsible for trail crews (two teams of 4 people) working on the Appalachian Trail at backcountry locations. Duties include organizing pre and post season logistics, teaching skills, leading crews in the field, making inventories of trail conditions, and submitting reports. The Field Coordinator will train and supervise crew members in trail design, construction, reconstruction, maintenance and backcountry camping. Trail work will involve: stone steps, waterbars, other erosion control structures and rigging systems. The Field Coordinator will ensure safe and sanitary conditions at campsites and worksites, transport crews, and respond to emergencies.  CPR/First aid training will be provided.

Qualifications: 

  • Two or more seasons working on New England trails
  • Backcountry backpacking, camping and cooking experience
  • Good health, physical fitness and able to hike long distances in mountain terrain
  • Experience building stone structures and using Griphoist equipment
  • Experience in the field with GPS – will train if necessary
  • Leadership skills - can provide oversight for two trail crews at multiple sites, teach skills, motivate others, maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions, and monitor progress, quality and quantity of trail work
  • Good organization and record keeping skills and with computers, Google Suite, Excel spreadsheets and MS Word
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Able to work without direct supervision

Maine Trail Crew Leader and Assistant Leaders

Dates: May 1 – October 1, 2021

Rate of Pay: Crew Leader - $19/hour, Assistant Leaders - $18/hour

Assistant Leaders will be responsible for assisting the Crew Leaders with the duties and responsibilities described below. They may have less experience, but generally should have the skills described for Crew Leaders.

Crew Leaders will lead a 4-person trail crew on foot, over rough terrain and for long distances while carrying equipment in all types of weather. They will train crew members in trail design, construction, reconstruction, maintenance and back country camping. The crew will build stone steps, waterbars and other erosion control structures. Crew leaders will ensure safe and sanitary conditions at campsites and worksites, transport crews safely, and respond appropriately to emergencies.  They will follow the direction of supervisors with respect to duties, logistics, timetables and projects. Advanced training with stone cutting, stone work, rigging systems and other trail work will be provided as well as training with CPR/First aid and leadership.

Qualifications: 

  • One or more seasons of trail work experience in an outdoor leadership role
  • Backcountry backpacking, camping and cooking experience.
  • Good health, physical fitness and able to hike long distances in mountain terrain
  • Leadership skills - able to take responsibility for all aspects of a trail crew, teach skills, motivate others, maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions
  • Good organization and record keeping skills
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Able to work without direct supervision

Maine Trail Crew – Member

Dates: May 1 to October 1, 2021

Rate of Pay: $17/hour

Maine Trail Crew Members will be an integral part of a small team camping on the Appalachian Trail and reconstructing targeted trail sections. Work will involve building stone steps, waterbars, retaining walls and other erosion control structures. Advanced training with stone cutting, stone work, rigging systems and other trail work will be taught as well as training in CPR/ First-aid. Sorry, no pets allowed.

Qualifications: 

  • At least one season of outdoor trail work
  • Backcountry backpacking, camping and cooking experience
  • Good health and physical fitness and ability to hike long distances in mountain terrain
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to live and work with others 
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment under challenging conditions

All of Maine Appalachian Trail Club’s Ridgerunner and Trail Crew positions require compliance with a COVID-19 safety plan. Sorry, no pets allowed. All positions will camp at backcountry sites during work days and some gear will be provided. Food will be on your own. Trail Crew employees will enjoy day-off housing at our base camp, in Dover-Foxcroft, ME. Whereas, Ridgerunners will receive a day-off housing stipend and day-off housing will be arranged individually (on your own).
