The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with the National Park Service at Haleakalā National Park, is recruiting (2) Kīpahulu Maintenance Technicians to participate in maintenance support in the Kīpahulu District of the park. 

Maintenance Technicians hired under this agreement will perform vegetation control around Kīpahulu District trails, campground and visitor center area. This maintenance support will ensure that high use trails, campground and Visitor Center areas are kept in good condition, fire risk is mitigated, and visitors are able to view the natural and cultural resources of Kīpahulu District.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Invasive, non-native, and weedy vegetation will be cleared from around archeological sites, trails, and visitor use areas such as campground and Visitor Center areas.
  • Native and Polynesian vegetation will be maintained in healthy condition and to protect nearby archeological sites and park facilities and infrastructure.
  • Maintenance Technicians will assist park Trail crews with maintenance of Kūloa Point Trail and Pīpīwai Trail in the Kīpahulu District.  They may also assist with maintenance on park buildings, such as painting or minor repairs.
  • Maintenance Technicians will assist park Resource Management staff with stabilization of archeological sites in the Kīpahulu Historic District.  

Timeline:

  • Term dates - Approx. August-April, 2027 (40 Weeks).
  • Full time (40 hours/week).
  • Schedule: Weekly schedule, 8 hours/day.

Location:

Haleakalā National Park extends from sea level to 10,023 feet. The coastal Kīpahulu District of the park receives over 80 inches of rain per year. In Kīpahulu, temperatures consistently range from the low to high 70s degrees Fahrenheit, providing a stable and comfortable climate throughout the area. Prepare to work in hot, humid, rainy weather. The Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park can be accessed by driving 12 miles past the town of Hāna, on the Hāna Highway that circumscribes the northeast coast of the island of Maui. There is internet access at the park. The Kīpahulu District is located approximately 2 hours from the Summit District of the park, along a long and winding road.

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation: $26.30 hourly.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Technical experience: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Technician position without more than normal supervision. Workers at this level perform the following duties: Operate ride on mowing equipment; Operate string trimmers and hedge trimmers; Operate motor vehicles with trailers; Apply herbicides for control of nonnative, invasive plants; Performs basic upkeep and maintenance of trails, grounds, and buildings.  Must be able to regularly carry at least 35 lbs with no assistance.  
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record.
  • Must meet PLC qualifications.
  • Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to National ] human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position. Preferred:

  • Soft skills; Good attitude, team player and ability to accept feedback and follow instruction.
  • Experience with Hawaiian dry stack masonry.
  • Experience with equipment assembly, installation, repair, and operation, per given instructions.
  • Nursery or greenhouse experience.

Physical Demands:

Service will be performed outside and weather can range from hot and sunny, to wet and windy. This position may predominantly be an outdoor position. Position requires a great amount of physical exertion. Position may include backcountry duties including hiking to and from remote camps/base at elevations up to 10,000 feet above sea level with backpacks up to 50 pounds over 3 -12 miles. Members must not be afraid of heights.
