Broadreach leads international summer programs for teens where they earn academic credits, develop new skills and travel with a group of their peers. Students participate in facilitated study abroad programs with a focus on marine biology and scuba diving.
Broadreach Instructors mentor and supervise a group of students as they travel to different locations and interact with local outfitters.
Groups typically have 8-12 students and 2-3 Broadreach Instructors. Instructors will attend a week of staff training and then lead programs in June, July and August.
Responsibilities Include:
Our instructors will lead a for credit, college level course for high schools. Instructors will relay information through lectures, guided discussions, assist with collecting research data and provide context to students as they observe local outfitters. As the academic lead for a program, you will be responsible for issuing and grading assignments including journal entries, research presentations, midterms and finals. We will provide course syllabus and program materials to our instructors prior to the summer.
Managing health and safety of students, maintaining a positive attitude through challenging circumstances, leading games, participating in service-learning activities, developing students’ personal growth, facilitating inclusive group dynamics and demonstrating respectful travel, leading academic discussion and grading student assignments.
Outside of lessons, instructors will supervise students in a 24/7 setting, eating meals with their group and supervising students into the evenings as well.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in marine science or a related field of study, is required.
- Ability to teach a college-level marine science course using experiential education methodologies, hands-on activities, field research, labs, surveys and demonstrations.
- Experience teaching marine science at a high school or college level is ideal.
- Experience facilitating groups of young adults and positive group dynamics.
- Able to actively participate in adventure activities including scuba diving, hiking, snorkeling, rafting, etc.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills to help manage program expenses, a budget, student documents and logistics.
- Scuba diving experience (Advance Open Water certified or higher)
- Availability from early June to mid-August is required.
- Comfortable living and working in a group environment with more rustic living conditions. E.g camp, hostel, liveaboard boat.
Broadreach is based in Raleigh, NC and our programs take place internationally. Program locations include Saint Martin, Curacao, Fiji, Mexico. Instructors will be placed in specific program locations, based on skills and experience.
Instructors will attend a week of training before leading a program, the season usually runs from early June through mid August.
